5. Lakeridge Health Board Inclusion, Diversity and Accessibility
Presentation:
Petrina McGrath (People, Quality and Practice & Chief Nursing Executive)
Umwali Sauter, Director of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA)
Bringing back the results from the focus group and community outreach. An
environmental scan was completed of how the community experiences Lakeridge
through the lens of IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility):
• Members of the community who identify as Black, Indigenous, and those with
disabilities felt overlooked and had a fear of asking questions — this was affecting
their level of care. This could be related to unconscious bias.
• These groups felt they could receive better care if there was representation from
their communities who could advocate for them.
• There is a requirement for a support system within Lakeridge Health.
• There is a requirement for a transparent and accountable system — the
community felt there is not an accountable system if there is a challenge or
complaint raised.
Improvement Actions:
• Patient advocacy 24/7 beyond the patient experience
• Greater transparency, communication, and accountability
• Information for patients and families about the Emergency process
• Greater support during crisis, especially for those with mental health and
addiction
Recommendations:
• Continue building trusting relationships with the community
• Establish accountability structures so people know if they are providing feedback
and that it will be listened to
• Care, through an equity lens
• Explore opportunities for advocacy structures
• Equity training and education
• Equity lens within recruitment practices and decision -making processes
Future planning
• Looking at having community members advising the EDI strategy
• Standing IDEAA committee on the Board now
• Only one of two hospitals that have an IDEAA committee
• Internal feedback was very similar to the feedback they received from the
external community
• 2 Inclusion communities — Black community and Indigenous community

• Accessibility committee
• Revising internal complaints process also to support staff
All of this impacts the hospitals, clinics, long-term care home, and mental health
services.
6. Business Arising from Previous Meeting Minutes
6.1 Durham Region Transit (DRT) on Demand Concerns:
• Brought it back to the quarterly meeting for Accessibility Coordinators of Durham
Region; suggestions to share general concerns and feedback with the General
Manager of DRT. Also, a Townhall with DRT especially for those community
members that have concerns
• Feedback from Tim — He feels that he has made multiple complaints and has had
meetings with various managers at DRT, but nothing ever changes; the drivers
are also frustrated because they are not able to provide the services the
community needs.
• Laila to connect with DRT with these concerns for answers and what solutions
are being looked into.
6.2 Parasport Winter Games 2023 and Access Now App:
• Laila provided an update that the Parasport Games are being hosted in Durham
Region in 2023.
• The games will bring hundreds of athletes and the challenge has been proposed
that Municipalities and local businesses add their buildings and businesses to the
Access Now app to rate how accessible they are.
6.3 Accessibility Day Celebrations — Durham Region:
• Clarington AAC had nominated Kingsway Hardware's owner Chico Khan for
his exceptional Customer Service, and he has won the accessibility award for
