Ruth has retired from the Land Titles office and has been assisting with the research on the various homes and properties. Ruth's skills in finding the information at Land Titles is much appreciated. ADOPTION OF MINUTES 12.15 Moved by Tenzin Gyaltsan, seconded by Karina Isert THAT the minutes of March 20th, 2012 be accepted "CARRIED" BUSINESS ARISING 156 Church Street —Faye had a meeting with Regional Facilities, Real Estate, Regional Planning and the Day Care Manager. The meeting was very positive, as a follow-up Faye has drafted a sample by-law so that agreement on all the architectural features to be listed can be addressed. 5290 Main Street - the house is adjacent to the CIBC property, the property owner has received a CIP grant for facade restoration improvements. Karina has followed up and will be meeting with the property owner. 1 106 and 107 Beaver Street —Allan consulted with other members of NVDHS and provides the following: These buildings were built circa 1900 by Mr. Hall. He made the block on site. Most of the block houses in Clarke and the western part of Hope Township where made by him after he immigrated from England and these 2 are believed to be the first. These 2 houses were moved last year about 100 yards to the south of where they were originally located. 20 Horsey Street — Plaque was presented at Council on Monday March 26th. Bill Paterson brought along the tools (Mr. Creeper's) that were work tools of the last Mr. Creeper, in the carpentry business he operated from the house. Plaque has been installed. 30 Silver Street, Bowmanville - Work is proceeding on this building, Faye and Angela took a tour with the owner. Most of the original moulding, plaster (including medallions) and crown mouldings remain on the main floor and second floor (at the front). The house had been added to over the years at the back, much of which has been removed. The house will become 4 units, with 3 entering off of the north driveway and then the main unit from the front. The work being carried out is time-consuming but by people familiar with what has to be done (the owner has previously rescued other buildings). 608 Mill Street, Bondhead This is a one and a half story wood frame structure built during World War II by Eric Johnson as a summer cottage. He did not own the land and never did own the land. It has no foundation it was built on wood pilings. The owner had inquired as to why it was listed as a merit resource, this should be removed based on this information. 612 Mill Street, Bondhead This is a 1 story brick regency cottage built circa 1840 as the miller's residence for the Atherestone Mills. The property was owned by the McIntosh family from 1840 until it was sold to Doctor Carveth about 1910. It remains with the Carveth family until 2008. In the 1970s Gordon Carveth retired here and hired a very prominent architect by the name of Napier Simpson to enlarge the building and turn it into a permanent residence. The original core of the building remains unchanged. It should remain on the heritage resource list. Kemp family, 3187 Middle Road - Angela and Ruth have uncovered some interesting historical information about the property. It has passed through a number of very prominent families, the Kemp's purchased in 1957. Faye to contact Kirk for next step. 2 Knox family, 6325 Enfield Road - Jenni advises that they would like to proceed but suggests that since research is being done for Doors Open that it be used and augmented once it has been provided by Charles Taws. Heritage Week Event —The committee members were canvassed for their interest in holding educational events during heritage week. Ideas were sent to all via e-mail from members. A sampling of ideas is to have a "proclaim the week", a banner across the street, work with other groups, walking tours, colouring contest, Massey connection, list of 90 favourite things. A subcommittee of Angela, Allan, Tracey, Tenzin and Karin was formed, they will draft a letter of invitation to other groups to participate with the CHC. Faye will compile a list of groups and addresses. Plaques — the search for plaques of alternate materials is ongoing. The most recent version is thinner and the detail is sharper, the mounting mechanism has changed so it is flush. People should go check out 20 Horsey Street installation. Concern was expressed that should the plaque explain why the building is designated that it may act as an invitation for some to enter onto private property. However, there are other buildings that are on the sidewalk (commercial ones which would benefit from better knowledge). Search for alternates will continue. OHT nominations for 2012 —Faye provided a listing of who have received recognition in the past, some additional names were generated as future potential nominees. CHO Conference in Kingston — Tenzin will attend on Thursday, Angela and Tracey on Friday. Angela will look into registering. REPORTS from OTHER COMMITTEES Bowmanville CIP, Sheila Hall from Clarington Board of Trade (CBOT) was in attendance to provide an update to the group. CBOT works on business retention and attraction, they also have worked on a shop local campaign. The different programs offered by CBOT assist businesses in cutting costs, retaining employees and networking with other businesses in the community. The shop local campaign and logo continues and this year CBOT is looking at a Christmas campaign. One of the opportunities is the vacant stores in the downtowns, the ability of CBOT to assist in finding new businesses and tenants is landlord driven, there has to be diligence in repair/maintenance and fair rental rates. 3 Orono CIP, next meeting is being rescheduled to April 24th for the Refresh presentation. The Orono CIP liaison group will be inviting other groups to attend, heritage committee members are encouraged to take advantage of this invitation. Newcastle CIP, next meeting is April 26th will be the Refresh presentation. Other community and committee members will get an invitation to this event as well. ACO — Clarington Branch, Working on Doors Open for 2012. 2000 magazines will be out mid-April with all sites across Ontario. Volunteers to assist on June 9th in Clarington can contact Marilyn Morawetz mjm @team evergreen.com. The ACO branch has launched a Camp 30 website with accurate information from museum. bgp.L//camp3O.com/ The ACO branch is looking at doing a fundraising tour in the fall of 2012. Tracey will forward the electronic link for ACORN the magazine of the ACO. NVDHS — The group is working towards digitizing the database for their collection. During the excavations at the No Frills site, 92 King Avenue West in Newcastle, portions of the former furniture manufacturing building that had been on site in the early 1900's were exposed and removed. Allan was able to photograph and also rescue a portion of one of the foundations for the local history room. It is regrettable that the entire foundation was not exposed at one time as there was no way to map the extent of the foundation which was larger than most anticipated. This has caused much larger excavations and backfilling than anticipated. Museum - The Museum has restructured some of its committees to create a more streamlined organization. FINANCIAL REPORT Opening balance open $4,601.42 Feb 24 interest 0.04 Feb 29 close $4,501.46 March 23 12.16 Moved by Karina Isert, seconded by David Reesor THAT the financial report be received. "CARRIED" 4 CORRESPONDENCE and COUNCIL REFERRAL None PROJECT REPORT Heritage Inventory The photography is ongoing. David and Karin have been working in Clarke and Orono, have met a couple of owners interested in designation that they will follow-up with. They have logged 15 hours and 500 kilometres since the last meeting. Website - Angela will be making a presentation to Council at the GPA meeting on Monday, April 23rd. Faye will demonstrate the site after that time it will go public. • Numerous typos and other small errors noted and corrected. • Some owners provided better photographs to be used including some aerial shots, etc. • Numerous churches provided updated information regarding contacts, this has been directed to MPAC for updating in the database as it is where we receive our information from. Because churches do not receive tax notifications much of this information was not current. • One property description that was totally wrong, when investigated the incorrect schedule had been attached to the by-law. This has been corrected by Clerks and at Land Titles. • One property we had missed in the write-ups has been added. • Positive comments on the website and its functionality, no negative comments or requests, no comments with regard to privacy issues. Faye distributed maps of two walking tours that the Rotary Club is working on for Bowmanville for their Foundation meeting in September. The mapping has been provided by Clarington as well as the background information. Lyle Goodin of the Rotary Club is working on the write-up and reviewing with Charles (from Museum). One of the suggestions is to have members of the Heritage Committee stationed at different points along the walk to provide expanded history (this means members would only have to learn one script and repeat a number of times). Eventually when the tours are written up they can be posted to the website as downloadable documents. The same could apply in the future for Orono and Newcastle. NEW BUSINESS Concern for Windfield Farms some of the buildings, barns, etc. Tracey will forward the information she has from Oshawa. David Reesor moved the meeting be adjourned. Next meeting: May 7t" at 7:00 p.m., Room 1C 5
