BUSINESS ARISING
156 Church Street —Faye has a meeting scheduled for April. The facilities people have
concerns about being able to maintain the building as a Day Care Facility should it be
designated.
5290 Main Street — the house is adjacent to the CIBC property, the property owner has
received a CIP grant for facade restoration improvements. Karina Isert offered to follow
up with the property owner. Faye will make first contact so that owners know Karina will
be contacting them.
106 and 107 Beaver Street — Tenzin provided an update on how the renovations to
these homes are coming along. The cement blocks the homes are constructed of is
called Artstone and was made on site when the homes were built. 106 has been totally
stripped back to the stud walls and will be a new home on the inside. 107 has survived
the move much better as it has not previously been renovated. Tenzin has offered to
provide a tour later in the process.
1
20 Horsey Street — Plaque has arrived and will be presented at Council on Monday
March 26th. Presentation will be by Angela and the Mayor to Bill Paterson.
30 Silver Street, Bowmanville — Work is proceeding on this building, Faye has been
offered a tour and will be taking the owner up on it.
608 & 612 Mill Street, Bondhead — Owner inquiring about why the home is listed as
primary resource, Allan is going to look into possible connections with Carveth family,
Bondhead Harbour Company and Massey Manufacturing.
Kemp family, 3187 Middle Road —Angela will proceed with research.
Knox family, 6325 Enfield Road — Faye will follow-up to determine if CHC should
proceed with research.
Heritage Week Event — Event on Feb 25th had 35-40 attendees including two
Councillors and Mayor, some attendees from as far away as Brighton. Passion of Peter
Stokes for his work was very obvious and the devotion he has had to heritage. This
was the only event in Clarington to commemorate Heritage Week and was really due to
partnership with ACO branch.
The committee members were canvassed for their interest in holding educational events
during heritage week, consensus agreed it was beneficial. Karin recalled that the
committee has held events, speakers, discussions at Beech Centre (e.g. about 7-8
years ago).
For next meeting members are to bring with them ideas for a cheap, volunteer driven,
easy to accomplish event that would involve other partners like ACO, Museum, NVDHS.
Plaques — the search for plaques of alternate materials is ongoing. Faye has sent the
design to David, Ron and Andrew. The most recent version just received is thinner and
the detail is much sharper, the mounting mechanism has changed so it would be harder
to pry them off a wall (making them more vandal resistant).
There are a number that say "Town of Newcastle" and some of the owners of
designated properties would prefer "Clarington". The committee members feel strongly
that the plaque is a benefit of designation and should reflect the investment by the
owner in maintaining the building. In addition, a different material may provide the
opportunity to have more information on the plaque to explain why the building is
designated and also include a historical sketch of the building.
2
OHT nominations for 2012 — Motion passed at last meeting, Faye will work on write-ups.
Committee members are requested to think of others worthy of nomination.

PROJECT REPORT
Heritage Inventory
The photography is ongoing. David and Karin have been working in Clarke, have met a
couple of owners interested in designation that they will follow-up. There are a couple
of properties very far in from the road; permission from owner to enter property is
required (will talk to Faye).
Website
There are updates, maps and more information being added. The issues about locating
properties has been addressed, maps added so that they can be easily found, some
photos have yet to be uploaded and links to designation by-laws will be added later.
Suggestions and typo corrections welcome. The intention is to link to other portions of
the Municipal website for items such as heritage conservation district study, community
improvement plans, CHC minutes, sign by-law, etc. Letter to designated property
owners is ready to go as a "soft launch" for website.
Karin and David were asked for locations of the pictures that are the header and footer
(e.g. tobacco kilns and railway bridge). Faye will add a disclaimer that this is not an
exhaustive inventory and listing of Clarington's heritage resources, there are
archeological sites and other heritage resources that are not on inventory.
Discussion on how the website is very basic and that it could be improved and designed
to represent the character of heritage in Clarington, as an example the Oshawa site has
an art deco look as many of its heritage resources are from that era. Members agreed
that it is a work in progress and will continue to be added to and improved over time.
Tracey offered assistance in helping to update the look of the site.
