at this event.
1.0 BACKGROUND
1.1 As members of Council are aware, the Official Opening of the Courtice Community Complex
is scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 1997. Since confirmation of that date, an organizing
committee has been meeting weekly to plan the events for the Opening Day celebrations.
1.2 The organizing committee is comprised of representatives from the following:
o Clarington Public Library
o Build Courtice Fundraising Committee
o Clarington Kids Day Care
o Marketing Tourism/Economic Development
o Community Services Department
o Council (Liaison to Community Services Department)
1.3 The Committee is very enthusiastic and plans are well under way with a series of
activities being planned over the course of the day. The event will be family orientated
with various activities and entertainment taking place highlighting the components that
make up the facility.
2.0 PROGRAMMED EVENTS

2.2 As capacity of the various components of the complex is limited, the Committee felt it
was appropriate to provide a series of activities to be planned over a period of time.
This is intended to allow as many members of the Community an opportunity to be
introduced to the facility, and get a flavour for the type of programs, and opportunities
that the Complex will offer. With that in mind, the doors to the complex will open to
the public from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. that day.
2.3 Various demonstrations and activities will commence at 10:00 a.m. and will be geared
to a specific timeframe, to allow the public to visit all areas of the complex. These
activities will run on a 20 -30 minute cycle and in some cases will be repeated to allow
everyone an opportunity to participate. Live entertainment is also being planned for the
day with local talent being featured in the Community Hall.
2.4 A detailed schedule will be advertised prior to the event to allow families an opportunity
to plan their day and make sure they visit the activity areas that they are interested in.
3.0 OFFICIAL CEREMONIES
3.1 At 2:00 p.m. sharp, all activities will stop, and staff will organize the public for the
official ceremonies to take place from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m. It is at this time that the official
party will be escorted by descendants of the first area residents to their designated area.
3.2 At the conclusion of the Official Ceremonies, activities and entertainment will
commence once again and a reception is also being planned in the Community Hall.
The day's events will conclude at 4:00 p.m.
4.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
4.1 It is the Organizing Committee's intention by way of this report to provide Council with
a general overview of the day's events to allow for input from Members of Council at
this time. Work will continue throughout the summer to finalize all arrangements.
4.2 The Committee is requesting at this time, that Council endorse the intent of the
program and further provide specific direction with respect to Council Members'
representation as guest speakers at the event.
4.3 During the course of the summer months, Members of Council will be provided with
a complete itinerary for the opening once all arrangements have been finalized.
