THAT Report No. CS -08 -96 be received for information. 1.0 BACKGROUND 1.1 The 1996 Clarington Kids of Steel Triathlon event was a huge success for everyone involved. The Triathlon held in the Municipality of Clarington, was the second time for the series, and attracted approximately 167 young athletes ranging in age from 5 to 18 years. 1.2 The success for the 1996 event is directly related to the following: a hard working team of volunteers consisting of Municipality of Clarington employees and outside individuals; a challenging yet safe race course; Municipal support including: road closures, event set -up and central area location with access to facilities and equipment; and financial and product sponsorship from the following businesses: AT & T, Bowmanville Sports Shop, Canadian Tire Corporation, Clarington Fire Department, durham Regional Police, Gatorade, Guardian Drugs, Harvey's Restaurants, Hooper's Trophy Centre, Ramnor Heaters & Air Conditioning, St. Mary's Cement Company, St. Anne's Pure Spring Water, Tiger Balm, Watson farms, A & P, Bank of Montreal, global drugs, Liotta's Prices, Successories, Advancing Play, Bev's Floral, I.D.A. Drugstore, Oshawa Centre and South China Buffet. 1.3 The overall feedback from competitors, volunteers and spectators was very positive. The Municipality of Clarington Kids of Steel Triathlon event was commended by the Ontario Association of Triathletes and parents as being one of the best organized events within the 1996 series. It is due to the above mentioned factors that we feel very confident in hosting another Annual Clarington Kids of Steel Triathlon again on August 23, 1997. ../2 DPA,,R Et.,RAE 1006 THIS B PRIMED W RECYCLED PAPER REPORT CS -08 -96 - 2 - SEPTEMBER 23,1996 2.0 CLARINGTON FITNESS CENTRE HEADQUARTERS 2.1 The race headquarters located at the Clarington Fitness Centre (49 Liberty Street North) provided quick and direct access from highway 401, facility exposure for the event, a venue which was safe for competitors and families, while also providing adequate parking. The Municipality's large Marquis tent and sound equipment provided a comfortable meeting area for the event meal and awards ceremony. 3.0 THE EVENT 3.1 The highlights included; 25 metre pool setting for the swim, bike course on closed paved roads (no confusion of laps), run course on closed paved, flat and climbing roads (no confusion of laps), race kits with sponsor gift donations, promotional materials, event T- shirts, event bathing cap, food refreshments from local suppliers and after race meal consisting of pizza and pop. 4.0 THE ROUTE 4.1 Careful consideration was taken to ensure a safe, competitive and challenging, yet fun. Volunteers and officials were stationed along the course to ensure safety and proper direction for all participants. 4.2 The Clarington Fitness Centre pool is a 25 metre pool which accommodated 12 participants per heat, with two (2) minutes between each heat and a fifteen (15 minute) stagger between age groups. This allowed safe spacing for all participants. The bike and run course consisted of various distances starting and ending at the Clarington Fitness Centre. The distances of the event varied depending on the age of the athlete. 5.0 AWARDS 5.1 Each participant who crossed the finish line was presented with a certificate of participation and a Clarington Kids of Steel medallion. After the last competitor crossed the finish line, special awards to the top three (3) participants in each age group were presented with medallions from the Ontario Association of Triathletes. Included in the registration package fee for all competitors was their after race meal, consisting of two (2) slices of pizza, drink, oranges, apples, grapes and cookies. 5.2 The Clarington Kids of Steel Triathlon was an Ontario Association of Triathletes sanctioned race with officials present. The race met specified safety standards and was considered by participants, parents and the Ontario Association of Triathletes to be a well organized and safe event. UM ..3 REPORT CS -08 -96 - 3 - SEPTEMBER 23,1996 6.0 CONCLUSION 6.1 Due to the enthusiasm and interest shown by volunteers, parents and participants, the Clarington Kids of Steel Triathlon will continue to be an annual event striving to encourage the youth of the Municipality of Clarington to be a part of the growing sport of Triathlons.
