CURLING BONSPIEL
Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend
to Council the following:
1. THAT Report CS -23 -95 be received for information.
1.0 BACKGROUND:
1.1 The Ontario Recreation Facilities Association has been providing networking opportunities
to its members for forty -eight (48) years. The Municipality of Clarington has been an active
member for many years and hosted a general meeting in 1991 at the Garnet B. Rickard
Recreation Complex.
1.2 This year members were asked to submit their requests to host the Annual Curling Bonspeil.
Four Municipalities expressed an interest including the Municipality of Clarington. In
February, the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association awarded our Municipality the 1995
Curling Bonspiel. Even though the Municipality does not have a curling rink, there are
many opportunities to promote and market Clarington.
1.4 The Oshawa Curling Club will be the site of the Bonspiel with 32 teams from all over
Ontario expecting to participate. Our Department will be promoting local businesses and
will be purchasing the prizes and awards from our community.
1.5 In 1994, four members of staff participated at the event held in Kitchener and provided a
respectable showing in true Clarington colours. Efforts will be made to promote throughout
the Region of Durham and specifically involve the City of Oshawa in our event.
1.6 As this event is self sustaining, there would be no costs to the Municipality with the
operation of the event.
