THAT Report No. CS -15 -94 be received; 1.0 BACKGROUND 1.1 1994 marks the 11th year of the March Break Bonanza program as planned, organized and implemented by the Community Services Department. The program schedule has incorporated both structured (pre- registered) as well as unstructured activities. 1.2 As of the 1993 operation, the program format of the pre- registered portion was redesigned to allow for greater variety in planned activities and to accommodate increased participation by local children between the ages of 6 and 13 years. Interested participants could choose to register in, either, the Day Camp or the Day Trip programs. For reference, a copy of the 1994 program information is attached (Attachment #1) to this report. 1.3 Program information and registration forms were distributed to the public via two (2) methods. First, detailed information was included in the 1994 Spring/Summer Community Activity Guide which was distributed to all households during the first 10 days of February. Second, staff prepared approximately 7,200 program flyers, using the information from the Activity Guide, and delivered them to local elementary schools for distribution to their students. This method of distribution has been used successfully for past operations of both the March Break Bonanza as well as the Summer Day Camp. Please note that the registration ../2 911 1NI51S PRiMEUV ItECYCI£o pi1rE{ REPORT CS -15 -94 .2. The participants took part in a variety of activities including arts & crafts, games, special events and skating. Interested participants could register for the full week (Monday through Friday) or they could opt to participate on a daily basis. The combined registration (full week plus daily) was limited to 30 participants in order to allow the supervision ratio of 10 participants per program leader to be maintained. This ratio has been established in order to ensure parents that participants are provided with adequate supervision ensuring maximum safety and enjoyment. 2.2 The 1994 registered participation in this program is recorded on the table below. Note that the program was at maximum capacity (30 participants /day) as of February 24, 1994. NOTE: The numbers in ( ) indicates the number of people who asked to be put on the waiting list in case of a cancellation. 2.3 In order to accommodate working parents, an extended hours service was provided by the Department allowing parents to drop their children off at the Bowmanville Recreation Complex as early as 8:00 am and pick them up as late as 5:00 pm each day. Program Leaders were scheduled to provide on site supervision of children accessing this service. ../3 9 j2 REGISTERED TOTAL /DAY REGISTERED TOTAL /DAY FULL WEEK 19 (4) 15 MONDAY 14 33 13 28 TUESDAY 12 31 19 34 WEDNESDAY 13 32 27 42 THURSDAY 12 31 26 41 FRIDAY 12 31 13 28 TOTAL 82 (4) 113 NOTE: The numbers in ( ) indicates the number of people who asked to be put on the waiting list in case of a cancellation. 2.3 In order to accommodate working parents, an extended hours service was provided by the Department allowing parents to drop their children off at the Bowmanville Recreation Complex as early as 8:00 am and pick them up as late as 5:00 pm each day. Skydome /Hockey Hall of Fame) in addition to the popular activities from past program operations (eg. Wheelies /Kortright Outdoor Centre). The underlying goal is to provide program participants with the best and most varied schedule of activities that can be made available. It is possible that some participants would not have been able to visit some of the events and /or facilities without the Day Trip program. 5.2 In the future, the Department will accommodate as many individuals as possible without losing sight of the break -even concept that these programs are based on. Staff have already begun to investigate new and unique opportunities that might be available for the 12th March Break Bonanza in 1995. Ily submitted, Jo Oh P.
