Recommendations: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: 1. THAT Report No. CS -12 -94 be received; 2. THAT Council approve the suspension of admission fees, on the dates specified, in support of Canada's Fitweek. 1.0 BACKGROUND: 1.1 At a meeting of Council held on January 10, 1994, Council passed the following resolution: "That the correspondence received from Participaction regarding activities planned for Canada's Fitweek, May 27 to June 5, 1994 be received and referred to the Director of Community Services to report to the General Purpose and Administration Committee on activities which the Municipality has planned for Fitweek '94." 1.2 In compliance with this direction, staff have initiated a planning process that proposes a series of events and /or activities that will take place during Canada's Fitweek - May 27 to June 5, 1994. Please note that since Council passed the cited resolution, the Participaction Challenge Day event has been discontinued and all participation statistics for the week will be submitted for inclusion in the existing community award program entitled "Go for the Gold ". Council may recall that in 1992 the Municipality achieved the silver award through this program. 2.0 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS /ACTIVITIES 2.1 Community Services Department staff have been working to put together a schedule of events /activities that will attract the participaction of a variety of age groups. Where possible, staff have been endeavouring to establish co- operative initiatives with ../2 01 TH S IS `F1UTE WV RECYCLED PARER REPORT NO. CS -12 -94 - 2 - APRIL 5, 1994 some of our community partners. An overview of the current plans is presented on Attachment 1 for Council's information. As the plan is tentative as of the writing of this report, further details for each event /activity will be confirmed at the earliest possible date. 2.2 In the attached schedule, staff have made every effort to utilize municipal facilities and existing programs for the purpose of Canada Fitweek. The purpose of this is to increase the profile of our facilities and programs with little or no impact to the Department's operational budget. 2.3 In order to maximize participation, the Community Services Department has attempted to include "something for everyone" in our Fitweek'94 plan. Each person who participates will be asked to sign in (for statistical records) and, at the conclusion of the event, will be given a special certificate of appreciation (Attachment 2). In accordance with the concept behind Canada's Fitweek and to achieve the goal of maximum participation, the Department respectively requests Council's approval to suspend the applicable admission fees on the following days and times: Saturday, May 28 Adult Swim 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday , May 29 Family Swim 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Wednesday,June 1 Noon Swim 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Friday , June 3 Public Swim 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. 2.4 Finally, to ensure the public's awareness and participation Canada's Fitweek, the Community Services Department will promote the activities through a variety of resources. Press releases will be prepared and sent to the local newspapers and, if possible, community noteboard insertions will be requested on the local cable and radio stations. These services are available at no cost. Also, staff will prepare and distribute flyers to our program participants and posters will be distributed to area facilities including the Arenas, Fitness Centre and Libraries. 2.5 Upon completion of the week long schedule participation statistics will be submitted to the appropriate Participaction office and Council will be advised of the official outcome of this Municipality's "Go for the Gold" quest. j-1,- es pect y submitted, Reviewed by: JoTeph P/ Caruana, Director C munity Services Department JPC:JJC:dm d � W.
