SUB,ECT: OSHAWA/WHITBY THIS WEEK - 8TH ANNUAL SALMON DERBY
RESOLUTION #C-15-91
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose &
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:-
1. That Report No. CS-04-91 be received; and
2 . That Council donate a gift certificate in the amount of
$200 . 00 from Farrow's Bait, Tackle and Hunting Supplies as a
prize for the 1991 Salmon Derby event on behalf of the Town
of Newcastle;
3 . That staff of the Community Services Department be authorized
to purchase said gift certificate and deliver it to Mr. Mike
Hayakawa, the Salmon Derby organizer;
4 . That the required funds be drawn from the Tourism/Economic
Development Account #7710-00000-0299; and
5 . That Mike Hayakawa, Sports Director of the Oshawa/Whitby This
Week be informed of Council 's decision.

REPORT NO. CS-04-91 - 2 - FEBRUARY 4, 1991
1.0 BACKGROUND
1. 1 At the meeting of Council, held Monday January 14, 1991, a
letter was received from Mike Hayakawa, Sports Director for
the Oshawa/Whitby This Week newspaper. Mr. Hayakawa is the
organizer of the Salmon Derby and wanted to announce the 8th
Annual Salmon Derby and request a donation from the Town of
Newcastle to be used as a prize.
1.2 Through Resolution #C-15-91 this request was referred to the
Community Services Department for review and report.
1.3 The 8th Annual Salmon Derby will be held during the 6 week
period of June 15 to July 20, 1991 (inclusively) . In 1990,
a total of 1,917 individuals registered to participate in this
event. This represents an increase of approximately 300
anglers over the participation statistics for the 1989 event.
The money collected, through registration fees, is used to
support the local United Way (50%) and the Durham Region
Fishing Association (50%) .
1.4 Sponsors of the Salmon Derby receive, in exchange for their
donation, recognition for their support in the Oshawa/Whitby
This Week publication. Sponsors donating prizes valued at
$1000. 00 or more have their logos displayed on all
posters/flyers which are displayed at various retail outlets
within Durham Region, the Province of Ontario and parts of
the United States . All sponsors, regardless of the prize
value donated, are given recognition of their support in the
in-house Derby advertisements and prize listing which run
prior to and during the actual event.
1.5 The Town of Newcastle, through Council, have supported this
event for the past 4 years by donating a gift certificate,
from Farrow's Bait, Tackle and Hunting Supplies (Bowmanville) ,
in the amount of $200 .00 . This prize has been well received
by the Derby organizers and participants .

1.6 In light of the positive publicity and community support that
the past donations have provided the Town of Newcastle, it is
the recommendation of the Community Services Department that
this gift certificate be purchased as our prize donation to
the Salmon Derby and that it be delivered to Mr. Mike Hayakawa
on behalf of the Town of Newcastle.
