MEETING: GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION

SU CT: MARCH BREAK 1991 PROGRAM REVIEW
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose &
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:-
1. That Report No. CS-14-91 be received for information.
1 .0 BACKGROUND:
1 . 1 For the eighth consecutive year, Town of Newcastle children
have taken part in a wide variety of recreational
opportunities during their Annual March Break.
1 .2 A total of 1,315 children and their parents took part in the
various March Break activities . These programs, as outlined
in Schedule I were developed in co-operation with the Visual
Arts Centre and the Newcastle Public Library to provide
educational, cultural and physical activities .
2 . 1 Staffing for this program was comprised primarily of aquatic
staff who were also on their March Break. Parents as well as
individuals from the Community Services Order Program provided
volunteer hours to assist staff in supervising the March Break
programs .

2.0 STAFFING:
2 .2 Special resource people were also involved in the packages to
enhance the quality and variety of the programs . Resource
people included the Ganaraska Forest Centre staff, Visual Arts
Centre instructors and Speaking of Wildlife staff.
3.0 BUDGET:
3 . 1 As in past years, the intent of this program is to provide
opportunities through a break-even budget whereby the revenues
collected for the program will offset direct expenses
incurred.
4.0 SUMMARY:
4 . 1 The continued success and popularity of this annual event
continues to reinforce staff's position that these programs
are very worthwhile in providing area residents with leisure
opportunities .
