1991 CHILDREN'S SUMMER DAY CAMPS
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose &
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:-
1. That Report No. CS-25-91 be received for information.
1.0 BACKGROUND:
1. 1 Day camps were offered several years back by the Town of
Newcastle Community Services Department. Response was very
positive and programs were provided free to children.
1.2 This Day Camp Program was approved by Council in the 1991
Operating Budget. Registration numbers for Day Camps must offset
expenses or the program will be cancelled.
2 .0 PURPOSE:
2 . 1 The purpose of the day camp is to provide a safe environment for
children to play, learn new social, creative and physical skills
and improve existing ones, develop leadership abilities, positive
self-concept and a healthy attitude towards others .
2 .2 Due to the large amount of growth experienced by the Town of
Newcastle over the past several years, many new residents have
settled in the area and are looking for programs during the

summer for their children. Also, many parents are accustomed to
having this type of service available to them in other
communities.
3 . 0 SET-UP:
3 . 1 Programs will run for a one week period, Monday to Friday
8:30 a. m. to 3:30 p. m. The programs will be offered for eight
weeks commencing July 2, 1991 and ending August 23, 1991 at
various locations throughout the Town. The attached flyer shows
the dates and locations for the program this summer.
4 . 0 OPERATION:
The staff will consist of one Supervisor and three Leaders and
are being hired by the Town to supervise the eight week program.
Staff will be trained during the last week of June. The staff
will be responsible for planning the Camp's activities and
equipment requirements . Staff will be based at the Bowmanville
Recreation Complex office as this will facilitate the storage of
all equipment and supplies.
4 . 1 The Town will accept registrations at the Community Services
Department and the Newcastle Fitness Centre. Participants at
each location for each camp will be kept to a maximum of thirty-
five (35) children. This allows for a 10: 1 participant/Leader
ratio which is the recommended standard for this type of program
and target age group.
4 .2 Cost for participants will be $70 . 00 for a five (5) day week and
$56 . 00 for a four (4) day week. These fees are comparable with
other programs already in operation such as the Y.M.C.A. and
Y.W.C.A. Day Camps .
Respectfully submitted, Recommended for presentation
to the Committee,
