By-Law tE7ING: GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION DATE: June 17, 1991 REPORT #: rs—,5-91 FILE #: SURECT: 1991 CHILDREN'S SUMMER DAY CAMPS RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose & Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:- 1. That Report No. CS-25-91 be received for information. 1.0 BACKGROUND: 1. 1 Day camps were offered several years back by the Town of Newcastle Community Services Department. Response was very positive and programs were provided free to children. 1.2 This Day Camp Program was approved by Council in the 1991 Operating Budget. Registration numbers for Day Camps must offset expenses or the program will be cancelled. 2 .0 PURPOSE: 2 . 1 The purpose of the day camp is to provide a safe environment for children to play, learn new social, creative and physical skills and improve existing ones, develop leadership abilities, positive self-concept and a healthy attitude towards others . 2 .2 Due to the large amount of growth experienced by the Town of Newcastle over the past several years, many new residents have settled in the area and are looking for programs during the . ./2 i REPORT NO. Also, many parents are accustomed to having this type of service available to them in other communities. 3 . 0 SET-UP: 3 . 1 Programs will run for a one week period, Monday to Friday 8:30 a. m. to 3:30 p. m. The programs will be offered for eight weeks commencing July 2, 1991 and ending August 23, 1991 at various locations throughout the Town. The attached flyer shows the dates and locations for the program this summer. 4 . 0 OPERATION: The staff will consist of one Supervisor and three Leaders and are being hired by the Town to supervise the eight week program. Staff will be trained during the last week of June. The staff will be responsible for planning the Camp's activities and equipment requirements . Staff will be based at the Bowmanville Recreation Complex office as this will facilitate the storage of all equipment and supplies. 4 . 1 The Town will accept registrations at the Community Services Department and the Newcastle Fitness Centre. Participants at each location for each camp will be kept to a maximum of thirty- five (35) children. This allows for a 10: 1 participant/Leader ratio which is the recommended standard for this type of program and target age group. 4 .2 Cost for participants will be $70 . 00 for a five (5) day week and $56 . 00 for a four (4) day week. These fees are comparable with other programs already in operation such as the Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A. Day Camps . REGISTRATION Registration forms are to be filled out and dropped off at the Community Services Department with payment by JUNE 21, 1991. Programs are filled on a first come first served basis .
