By-Law # hEETING: GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE DATE: ' OCTOBER 7, 1991 REPORT #: rs-16-91 FILE #: SUBJECT: CITIZEN TREE PLANTING RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: 1. THAT Report No. CS-36-91 be received for information. 1.0 REPORT: 1. 1 Through previous reports Council has been advised of co-operative tree planting programs being carried out on Open Space lands by local residents and the Community Services Department. Through this program the Department will supply trees, stakes, tree ties, top soil, disposal of excess fill and supervision while the residents provide the tools and the labour to carry out the tree planting. 1.2 A verbal request was received from Mrs . Monika Kerekes of 50 Birchfield Drive in early summer for the Town to plant trees through the Open Space block which runs from Birchfield Drive to Centrefield Drive north of Nash Road and east of Varcoe Road in Courtice. Following discussions with staff, Mrs . Kerekes has organized and obtained the assistance of 43 neighbours on Birchfield Drive and Homefield Square to plant 40 bare root trees of various species eight to ten feet tall. . ./2 REPORT NO. CS-36-91 - 2 - OCTOBER 7, 1991 1 . 3 Co-operative tree plantings have many obvious advantages some of which are; working co-operatively with the residents creates a better understanding and encourages respect for Town property. - trees will be planted in locations agreeable to the Town where they will not interfere with maintenance - trees of a suitable size and species are planted - residents protect the trees from vandalism and will water them etc . over periods of drought - neighbours meet each other and work together for mutual benefit 1.4 The Community Services Department is pleased to work with our residents and will continue to encourage similar projects in the future. 1.5 This program will take place on Saturday, October 26, 1991 commencing at 10:00 a.m. Members of Council are encouraged to participate in this worthwhile project.
