REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE

SUBJECT: ROAD REPAIRS ASSOCIATED WITH
WATERMAIN BREAKS ON WAVERLEY ROAD
RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully, recommended:
1. That this report be received for information and a
'copy be forwarded to Durham Region Works Department.
REPORT:
The attached letter from the Region of Durham Works
Department details a situation which exists on Waverley
Road. Basically, the watermain on the street has been
plagued with breaks and repairs are made on a regular basis.
These repairs have required open - cutting of the road and
removal of sections of curb. The number and frequency of
such repairs has reached the stage where peremanent repairs
are impractical especially in view of the fact that the
watermatn is scheduled for replacement in 1986.

As an interim measure the Region would like to continue to
patch the excavations on the driving surface but temporarily
replace damaged curb sections with asphalt curb. -This is
not an unreasonable approach provided that the
reconstruction target of 1986 is maintained. In fact, the
Region should be encouraged to advance the watermain
replacement if at all possible, to minimize disruption to
residents, and inconvenience to the Town.
A copy of this report should be forwarded to the Region to
indicate the Town's concurrence with the above.

Re: Waverly Road - Road Repairs
WAT -N -1 -1 As you are aware, we have been experiencing considerable
difficulty with the watermain on Waverly Road. It has been
necessary to make numerous repairs to,it over the past two or
three years and because of its location, under or immediately
behind the curb, this work has resulted in an need to replace
a considerable portion of the total curb on the street.
At the present time, there is approxiamtely 100 m of curb to
be replaced. Actual replacement of the main itself is
scheduled to be carried out in 1986. In the meantime, there
will undoubtedly be other breaks resulting in more damage to
the curb. The purpose of this letter is to request your
agreement to replacement of damaged curb with asphalt curb by
our staff from now until such time as the existing main is
replaced in 1986. If for any reason the instal-lation of the
main is substantially delayed then this department will
undertake to replace the curb in concrete if you so desire.
May I please have your comments on this proposal at your
earliest convenience.
