The Town's participation in the Ministry of Transportation and Communications subsidy program requires preparation of a Road Needs Study and annual updating of that study. Through the annual update, an accurate representation of the condition of the Town' s road system is maintained so that a fair rate of subsidy will be provided. The identification of new roads maintained by the Town as well as the identification of new deficiencies or changing road status are carried out annually during a review of the Town' s road system by M.T.C. and Town staff during spring break up. .. .2 Page 2 Report No. WD-24-87 The 1986 Update has been completed and a summary of the factors reviewed is contained in Section 2 of the report. The Road Needs Study and the appraisal sheets are utilized as resource documents for schedules and design considerations as they relate to our road maintenance and reconstruction programs. Table 1 (a) provides summaries of the road system by surface type and by road function. Table 1 indicates that the Town has 231 .4 kilometers of gravel roads and 467.3 kilometers of paved roads and 60.8 kilometers of earth roads in the Town's system. Table 1 (b) shows that only 35.2 kilometers of roads in the Town' s system are curb and gutter urban section roads. Table 2 is a summary of the recorded ten year' s needs associated with the Town's roads and bridge system. Appendix A provides various costing information for the various types of reconstruction and appendices B,C,D and E summarize and inventory the various road sections, bridges and railway crossings in the Town, providing details as to such things as traffic volumes, surface type, and type and cost of improvement required. Each of the components in these charts has a reference number which is identified on the maps in the envelope at the back of the report.
