ENG., DIRECTOR HAMPTON,ONTARIO TEL.(416)263-2231 LOB 1J0 987.5039 REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE MEETING OF MAY 6, 1985. REPORT NO. : WD-31-85 SUBJECT: STREET NAME BY-LAW RECOMMENDATION: It is respectfully recommended: 1. That this report be received; and, 2. That staff be authorized to prepare a Street Name By-law in accordance with the Street Name Map, Schedule "A", and Street Name Inventory, Schedule "B", attached hereto. BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: In 1978, initiated by a request from the Ministry of i' Transportation and Communications, the Public Works Department commenced a review of all road and street names within the municipality with a long term goal of producing a Town of Newcastle Street Name Map and By-law officially naming all streets and roads. Page 2 REPORT NO. WD-31-85 Works Committee Resolution W-130-79 directed that east/west roads remain unchanged; that streets named by by-law remain so named and , that proposed street name maps be displayed in public places. The first public presentation of the map produced minimal input. Subsequently, staff contacted outside agencies, utility companies , and local residents with historical interests to obtain comments and assistance. These agencies and individuals provided valuable information which was incorporated into the Street Name Map. It was, however, recognized that where practical , continuous north/south roads should be uniformly named. Staff have endeavoured to follow Committee and Council direction and incorporate public input into the present Street Name Map. However, the map has been redrawn by Town Public Works staff using a more desirable format than the original single line first draft. Summer maintenance roads are now shown as dashed lines and are recognized in the Town' s Road Needs Study. Unopened road allowances are not shown, eliminating some of the confusion surrounding the first draft. . . . .3 Page 3 REPORT NO. WD-31-85 Following the most recent circulation of the Street Name Map to Members of Council , a petition was received from the residents of Shaw Road, formerly Training School Road, requesting that the road be named "Lambs Road". Committee may wish to recognize the petition and direct that Shaw Road be changed to "Lambs Road" prior to the formal adoption of the Street Name By-law. As the Town grows, there will be new streets and roads constructed and assumed, and public input similar to the petition received from the residents of Shaw Road may be acknowledged. It is the intention of the department to provide an opportunity for review annually, and subsequent revisions and changes could be incorporated at that time. It is, therefore, recommended that the Street Name By-law be prepared in accordance with the Street Name Map (Schedule 'A' ) and Street Name Inventory (Schedule ' B' ) , attached, or as amended. Respectfully submitted, R.G. Dupuis , P. Eng. , Director of Public Works. DTG:jco May 1 , 1985. Attachments (2)
