1. Land Acknowledgement
Rochelle shared Clarington's Land Acknowledgement Statement.
2. Review of Agenda - Declarations of Interest
Members were asked if they would like to declare any items of interest. No concerns
were shared.
3. Community Partnerships
An introduction email and information handout has been developed for members to use
when connecting with community organizations to initiate possible partnerships. This
will be circulated to members with the minutes of this meeting. Meera asked that
members advise Erica, Rochelle, and herself with whom they have made contact so
that we can avoid any duplication.
4. Review of Previous Meeting Notes
The notes of the meeting of October 13, 2021 were reviewed.
5. Community Resources
Erica shared a draft Community Resources list with the members. Melissa shared that
the Library also had a list of resources they could provide to enhance the draft list; she
will forward them to Erica for inclusion. Erica will share the initial draft with the minutes
and will update the draft list with information from Melissa's resource.
6. Black History Month Event
Members discussed opportunity to recognize and celebrate Black History Month
(February 2022). Some ideas that were discussed included:
• a panel discussion (after February)
• a movie screening (in-house or virtual — virtual may be best due to pandemic)
(Clarington Public Library will be looking at licensing options; the movie
Icebreakers was suggested). Option to include a film director or other related
person with a question -and -answer period.
• Podcast / Book Club — Melissa suggested a reading challenge
• Author Talk
• Highlight Black Businesses in Clarington
• Statement from Mayor Foster, proclaim February as Black History Month in
Clarington
Members opted to form a working group that will meet and bring back a recognition
plan to the next meeting. Melissa, Lauren, Angela, Hawa and Erica will meet offline to
discuss.
7. Other Business
Region of Durham's Anti -Racism Task Force has been appointed. Press release was
due out following the meeting and has since been released. Members discussed
concern that there were no Clarington residents included in the membership. As well,
members had applied but did not hear back on their applications. Erica to follow up
with Allison Hector -Alexander, Director, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the Region
and invite her to an upcoming meeting to discuss engagement in Clarington and how to
address issues in our community through this Task Force.
