3. Presentation —.Body-Worn Camera Initiative
Constable Julie Liard and Sergeant Stephanie Dickson presented to the group about
the Durham Regional Police Services (DRPS) Body -Worn Camera project that is
launching across the region. The use of body -worn cameras was raised initially in
2014, followed by the launch of a pilot project in 2018. Data from the pilot project was
analyzed throughout 2019 and once funding was received in 2020, this project was
rolled out for 2021. Currently launched in Ajax -Pickering and North Durham; to be in
Clarington early in 2022. Across Durham Region by Fall 2022.
Anyone who interacts with DRPS in situations where the body -worn cameras will be
used will be provided with a verbal warning to advise them. As well, the cameras will
have a flashing light to indicate they are in use. All footage will be stored and treated
confidentially, including any footage where minors may be captured. Redacted
information captured in the videos can be accessed by residents through a freedom of
information request. Footage is reviewed regularly by supervisors to ensure proper
adherence to the policies surrounding the use of the body -worn cameras. If members
have any additional questions about the project, they can reach out by email to
bwc .drps.ca.
Meera thanked Julie and Stephanie for their presentation.
