1. Land Acknowledgement
Meera McDonald read the Land Acknowledgement Statement and included a special
statement about the recognition of Remembrance Day.
2. Durham Black Accountability Coalition (DBAC) presentation to Oshawa
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee
Rochelle shared her experience when she attended a recent meeting of Oshawa's
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee with DBAC to speak about her involvement
in the creation of the Durham Black Lives Matter initiative and activities this group
coordinated this summer such as the rally. Rochelle recommended that Cristal Hines
(DBAC) be invited to speak to the Diversity Advisory Committee to clarify and answer
questions about the petition. Erica will share with Rachel for her consideration.
3. Policies
Meera advised policies from other municipalities have been collected as well as
possible related policies from the Municipality of Clarington. These can be found
through this shared link. Erica will upload policies collected from other municipalities to
this same site. If you come across policies or resources you feel would be helpful,
please share with Erica and she will upload to the site.
4. Virtual Event
Samantha shared that the Library could be open to partnering on a virtual event as
discussed at our September meeting. She would need more details around the
vision, panelists, moderation. Samantha is familiar with a recent initiative between
other Durham libraries and the Congress for Black Women. Angela was involved in
that initiative.
Angela and Erica will meet offline to come up with some ideas and details to share at
the next meeting. Samantha could then bring the information back to her team for
approval. Samantha suggested avoiding hosting an event around school break times
(i.e. Winter break, March break). A suggestion was made to look at offering an event
in February 2021 to coincide with Black History Month.
5. Black History Month
The Clarington Public Library is beginning to look at programming to recognize Black
History Month (February 2021). If anyone has ideas for activities, books, authors to
be included please share with Samantha.
5. Engage Clarington — Diversity and Inclusion in Clarington
Erica advised she met with the Communications Team to review the social media
plan as compiled by the group. Erica will summarize the discussion and provide at
the next meeting when Lauren is present for the conversation. Members are
encouraged to start the conversation on the Engage Clarington page by sharing their
stories; some have been included in the document Lauren created so members could
start with these. Community Diversity Survey is also live on that site; members are
encouraged to fill it out and share with their networks.
6. Diversity Advisory Committee — Call for Members
Clarington's Diversity Advisory Committee is currently looking for 4 members as the
first 2-year terms are expiring December 31, 2020. Apply by noon on Friday,
November 13 through the Clarington website.
