( LETTER gal WAVERLY ROAD DIVERSION:..
On September 8, 1975, Council received a letter from a
Mrs. Gail de Vries requesting that the street connecting Wav-
erly Road with Highway 2 be given a name in order to assist
residents in giving directions to their visitors. This road
was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Town of Newcastle
on August 9, 1974. It is therefore, appropriate for the Town
to name this street by by-law.
Mrs. de Vries suggested that the road be named 'Roenigk
Hill' or 'Roenigk's Hill' in honour of one of the oldest
families in Bowmanville. We appreciated the historical signi-
ficance of this name, but we found the spelling difficult and
the pronunciation obscure.
We therefore sought another suitable name with historical
character. We could think of no more historical character in
the area than Charles Warren, our Chief Building Inspector, who
is about to retire after many years of service to the commun.
ity. He agreed to the use of his name on condition that the
street be known as 'Sir Charles Drive'. We pointed out, how-
ever, that the use of titles had been abolished in Canada
since 1931.
We asked the Regional Planning Department for permission
to use the name Warren, and were informed that this name was
not available since it had already been used twice elsewhere
in the Region. However, it used in combination with another
word, the name Warren would be acceptable. We found that they
would accept name 'Warren Hill Drive'.
We note that there is no frontage development on this
street, and therefore no chance that anyone living there has
ever been served with a stop work order by the said Charles
Warren.
We therefore recommend that the StrGet connecting High-
way #2 with Waverly Road in Bowmanville be named Warren Hill
Drive by by-law and that the street be signed accordingly.
Respectfully submitted,
Ae4
George F. Howden,
Planning Director.
