NO: 82 - 59 SUBJECT: THE 125TH ANNIVERSARY OF BOWMANVILLE CELEBRATION RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. That this report be received for information; BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: iz•a. i $ -7 TELEPHONE 623-3379 Staff have been requested to prepare a report on the possibility of a committee being struck to organize a celebration of the 125th anniversary of the founding of Bowmanville. Staff met with a representative of the Bowmanville Chamber of Commerce in respect of the above matter who indicated that some discussion amongst Members of the Chamber had already taken place. It was indicated that the Chamber would be interested in having representatives from Town Council sit as members of a "steering committee" to organize the event. Councillors might wish to indicate their willingness to participate on such a committee. Cont'd Page 2...... 7 ca) ADMIN. NO: 82 - 59 Page 2 It was felt that the incorporation of the Town of Bowmanville on January 1, 1858 was an occasion of historic value that should be recognized. It was felt that July 1, 1983 might not be the most appropriate day to make the occasion as "Canada Day" celebrations might overshadow the Bowmanville Anniversary Celebrations. July 1, 1983 is also a Friday and it was suggested that any celebrations on the Friday of a summer "long -weekend" might experience attendance problems. It was indicated that the "steering committee" might make a request for a grant from Town Council to help defray some of the costs associated with this type of activity.
