MINUTES Moved by L. Creamer, seconded by J. Wildeboer THAT the minutes of the meeting held on June 18, 2015 be approved. CARRIED 2. BUSINESS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MEETING a) Initiatives and Focus The Committee discussed the four key areas of focus; action, education, cooperation, and communication. The goal of the Committee is to get the word out regarding what the Committee does, and gain appreciation from the community. The Durham Regional Police Service went out to approximately 10 schools across Clarington, providing information on topics including: internet safety, cyber-bullying, and social media. The goal was to be proactive, educating youth on how their current actions can impact their future. M. Wind, Durham Regional Police Officer, advised the Committee that he met with the Clarington Small Business Development Group and other groups who want to help with youth in the community. C. Newman, discussed the success of the second annual Community Cleanup Day. Councillor Hooper advised the Committee that he has been in contact with Boston Pizza, and they may be interested in helping during next year's event. b) Mural Wall C. Newman, Chair, provided the Committee with a rough draft of the rules and regulations for the contest. He asked that the Committee review and suggest changes if required. Once final rules have been completed, they will be sent to the Committee and Region of Durham for approval. C. Newman advised the Committee that he has met with James Campbell from the Visual Arts Center to his involvement in the project. Chris also indicated that he would reach out to Todd Tremeer, who has experience with murals. The Committee discussed a central theme, and the possibility of adding a disclaimer with a clause that would disqualify contestants if they were caught tagging. The Committee's goal for the contest is to encourage youth to focus their talents on the wall. J. Wildeboer brought forth the idea of reaching out to a post -secondary institution or the Ontario College of Art and Design to inquire about potential scholarships, and the possibility of using a staff member on the judging panel. L, Bourgeois asked if it was the Committee's intention to aim towards individual or classroom initiatives, because that will play into the possibility of a scholarship. C. Newman will send L. Preston, Committee Secretary, an electronic copy of the draft rules and regulations that Laura will then distribute to the group. The Committee comments that the rules and regulations should include a picture, and dimensions of the wall, as well as a completion date for the project. c) Formation of Sub -Committee C. Newman discussed the option of creating a Sub -Committee for the mural wall initiative. Chris Newman, Marten Wind, Leah Bourgeois, and Councillor Hooper will all participate and determine the details of the project. L. Preston will send out email looking for one more person to join the sub -committee. d) Graffiti Reporting L. Creamer provided an update on the new graffiti reporting system. The goal for the new reporting format is to make it easier to file a complaint. Currently there are amendments being made to the online complaint system and Len is hoping to have it up and running for the end of the month. Once completed, there will be a Report to Council to share the new information. 3. NEW BUSINESS a) Durham Regional Police Trending Reports No new information. Clarington Safe - 3 - September 17, 2015 Communities Committee 4. OTHER BUSINESS Family Safety Day is scheduled for September 26, 2015, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The event will take place at Fire Station #1 in Bowmanville. J. Wildeboer brought forth information on leadership and the upcoming Global Leadership Summit. John provided handouts for the Committee and indicated that if anyone has questions they can contact John. L. Bourgeois advised the committee that all residents within a 10 kilometer radius are now provided with Potassium Iodide pills. Fright Night is taking place at the Youth Center on October 23 and 24. The event is both family friendly and geared toward adults later in the evening. The cost is $10.00, all three floors will be used. Hype of Hoops initiative with DRPS, will be taking place on November 7, 2015 at the Newcastle and District Recreation Complex. Proceeds raised from the event will be donated to the Bowmanville Rotary Club and Youth Center. 5. DATE OF NEXT MEETING October 15, 2015 6. ADJOURNMENT Moved by L. Creamer, seconded by J.
