NO. 33-81 SUBJECT: NEWCASTLE VILLAGE CONNECTING LINK RECOMMENDATION: 1. That this report be received; and 2. That Council authorize the preparation of design criteria and cost estimates for the upgrading of the Highway #2 connecting link; and further, that staff be authorized to submit such a cost estimate to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications; and further, that expenditures in connection with this work be taken from Account Number 7212-000-900. BACKGROUND: Further to the report to the General Purpose and Administration - Committee meeting of October 13 1981 in respect of the above, a meeting was held on October 27 1981 with Newcastle staff, representatives of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications and representatives of the Newcastle Business Improvement Area. At that meeting, Ministry staff indicated that there are different alternatives available to the Municipality for the possible future upgrading of Highway #2 through Newcastle Village. It was indicated that, at the moment, M.T.C. is contemplating the reconstruction through the Village as a 1984/1985 project, but that it may be possible with the Town's participation, to undertake the reconstruction through the Village, in whole or in part, in 1982 or 1983. .2 -2 - ADMIN. NO. 33-81 In order for the Town to properly evaluate its potential involvement in the reconstruction with M.T.C., it would be appropriate to prepare at this time, design criteria and a cost estimate for the project. Ministry representatives will not be in a position to discuss this with the Town on November 9th as previously indicated to the Committee, but will be in a position to discuss this later in the month.
