~T #: CD-41-87 FILE #: 68.29.99.
SUBJECT:
COMPARISON OF MATERIALS AVAILABLE FOR
USE AS DOG TAGS
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee
recommend to Council the following:
1. That Report CD-41-87 be received for information.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
Some months ago, Councillor Hamre requested that we review the types of material
available and the costs associated with the manufacturing of dog tags from each material.
By memorandum dated May 29th 1987, the Purchasing and Supply Agent has provided a material
and cost analysis for Brass, Aluminum and plastic dog tags. The memorandum details the
problems inherent in the manufacture and use of plastic dog tags and recommends against
their use. Based upon the facts detailed in Mrs. Birkett's memorandum, I would
respectfully reques~~~ithat the General Purpose and Administration Committee receive
this report for information, and permit Animal Control to continue to use the aluminum
dog tag which is, I believe, both satisfactory and cost effective.
Respectfully submitted

SUBJECT; DOG TAGS
cal C ~ (~J
In response to your recent memo regarding a price comparison of dog tags, I have
obtained the following prices:
Ketchum Toronto Stamp
Brass $2541.9141/m $341. P1~/m
Aluminum 1941.~41/m 264.~~/m
345. ~41/m (approx . )
Plastic n/a
Although Toronto Stamp does not actually sell a plastic dog tag, they could use
another standard plastic tag and hot stamp the required information. This is
why the price I have shown is approximate only. However, they strongly dis-
courage the use of plastic dog tags for the following reasons:
1. Animals can easily chew the plastic
2. Sharp edges may harm animals if the tag breaks
3. Plastic tags will not withstand the cold temperatures
4. Plastic is not as durable as brass or aluminum
Please let me know should you require any additional information.
Your truly,
