REPORT #: CD-42-87

RECOMMENDATIONS:
FIIF #: 35.31.21.
ONTARIO RENEWS AWARDS - 1987 PROGRAM
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee
recommend to Council the following:
1. That Clerk's Report CD-42-87 be received for information.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: (Council Minutes June 8, 1987 - Resolution #C-522-87)
Council received the correspondence dated May 12th 1987, from the Minister of Housing,
with respect to the "Ontario Renews Awards - 1987" Program, and referred it to staff for
review and a report to the General Purpose and Administration Committee.
As requested by the Minister, the material relating to the program has been put on
display and made available to the public in both the Clerk's Department and the Planning
Department. The program is intended to recognize renovation works of significance, which
have been completed during the three year period ending in 1987. An additional category
has been added this year: that is, a "Non-Residential Renovation" of commercial,
industrial or institutional buildings category is now eligible for consideration and
recognition under the awards program. The Town of Newcastle's Administrative Facility
Renovation and construction program could, we believe, fall within this new category.
However, it must be noted that it would not qualify until 1988, that being the year of
project completion. It is staff's opinion, that our new administrative project would
fare well in the competitionfor awards in 1988.

Recently, it was my pleasure to announce the opening of
the 1987 Ontario Renews Awards competition. For those of
you who may not be familiar with the program, the Ontario
Renews Awards (ORA) were established seven years ago as a
means of encouraging renovation by recognizing and
honouring outstanding examples of this work.
The importance of renovation activity in our society
continues to grow at an outstanding rate. In 1986,
Ontarians spent over $5.5 billion on renovation projects,
providing better housing, better neighbourhoods, jobs and
a more stable tax base for communities right across the
province. Ontario continues to be a leader in Canada for
renovation and through the Ontario Renews Awards program,
it is my hope that we can continue to share new and
innovative ideas and techniques with the countless home
owners, architects and renovators engaged in this ongoing
improvement of our homes and communities.
This year, several changes have been introduced to the
program which I believe reflect the diversity of
renovation activity being undertaken across the province.
A new category, Non-Residential Renovation, will
recognize the renovation of commercial, industrial or
institutional buildings and should be of interest to
municipalities undertaking renovation work on public
buildings or lands.
As well, I have instructed this year's jury to consider
submissions of do-it-yourself projects. Although a
specific category has not been set up for such work,
submissions which demonstrate a significant amount of do-
it-yourself labour and/or design will be considered for a
special award.
