Report CD-11-87 - 2 - February 16, 1987..
(// i~(~~
Pursuant to that direction, Councillor Cowman and the writer, met with a
representative of Coyle and Greer Awards Canada Limited, and subsequently by
Memorandum dated January 15th 1987, they provided an artists rendering of the
proposed Volunteer Service Pin.
The Civic Recognition Committee met on Friday, January 30th 1987, and with
respect to the volunteer service pin made the following decisions;
1. That the design submitted by Coyle and Greer be recommended to Council
for approval;
2. That Council be requested to authorize the expenditure of $75.00 plus taxes
for the manufacture of a "DIE" in the recommended design;
3. That if the design and die acquisition are approved, Coyle and Greer be
requested to produce at least three sample pins with differently coloured
ribbons for use by the Committee in determining the final colour combination.
Because the Volunteer Recognition Program is in its formative stages, the number
of pins required is unknown and it would be appropriate, therefore, to report on
pin acquisition at a later date.
The Civic Recognition Committee requests that the General Purpose and Administration
Committee receive this report and recommend i;ts approval to Council.
Respectfully submitted

PIN DESIGN RATIONALE:
The Pin is designed in a way which emphasizes the various elements of
the municipality.
1. The design is of the "Logo Type" which contains particular
elements in stylized `form.
- The green field supporting the large gold "N" delineates the
geographic boundaries of the municipality (Town of Newcastle).
- The large gold "N" signifies the unity of the municipality.
- The four gold wavy lines detailed in blue represent the four
predecessor municipalities of the Town of Newcastle.
- The yellow ribbon supporting the gold "Volunteer" delineates
the coming together of all of the volunteer groups in providing
service to the residents of the municipality.
2. The "Logo" design (with the ribbon removed) could be used by the
municipality for other purposes over time if Council wished.
i.e. - identification of vehicles;
- letterhead and other business and stationary products;
- advertising and display purposes;
- tourism and public relations, etc.
