St.JB.~CT ACQUISITION OF A LAPEL PIN FOR USE IN RECOGNIZING THE EFFORTS OF VOLUNTEERS RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: 1. That Clerk's Report CD-11-87 be received; and 2. That the design for the "Volunteer Pin" selected by the Civic Recognition Committee, be approved; and 3. That the Civic Recognition Committee be authorized to commission the manufacture - of a "Die" by Coyle and Greer Awards Ltd., in the approved design at a cost of $75.00 plus taxes; and 4. That the funds be drawn from the Unclassified Administration Receptions and Tributes Account #7007-00000-0235. BACKGROUND AND COMMENT The Civic Recognition Committee was directed by resolution on December 8, 1986, to "review and report on the acquisition of a lapel pin designed to recognize the role of volunteers associated with municipal activities." (// i~(~~ Pursuant to that direction, Councillor Cowman and the writer, met with a representative of Coyle and Greer Awards Canada Limited, and subsequently by Memorandum dated January 15th 1987, they provided an artists rendering of the proposed Volunteer Service Pin. The Civic Recognition Committee met on Friday, January 30th 1987, and with respect to the volunteer service pin made the following decisions; 1. That the design submitted by Coyle and Greer be recommended to Council for approval; 2. That Council be requested to authorize the expenditure of $75.00 plus taxes for the manufacture of a "DIE" in the recommended design; 3. That if the design and die acquisition are approved, Coyle and Greer be requested to produce at least three sample pins with differently coloured ribbons for use by the Committee in determining the final colour combination. Because the Volunteer Recognition Program is in its formative stages, the number of pins required is unknown and it would be appropriate, therefore, to report on pin acquisition at a later date. The Civic Recognition Committee requests that the General Purpose and Administration Committee receive this report and recommend i;ts approval to Council. Chief Ad in Strative Officer PIN DESIGN RATIONALE: The Pin is designed in a way which emphasizes the various elements of the municipality. 1. The design is of the "Logo Type" which contains particular elements in stylized `form. - The green field supporting the large gold "N" delineates the geographic boundaries of the municipality (Town of Newcastle). - The large gold "N" signifies the unity of the municipality. - The four gold wavy lines detailed in blue represent the four predecessor municipalities of the Town of Newcastle. - The yellow ribbon supporting the gold "Volunteer" delineates the coming together of all of the volunteer groups in providing service to the residents of the municipality. 2.
