2. DRAFT GROUP HOUSING POLICY
Anne introduced Mary Jane Bacon, Animal Control Officer, Municipality of
Clarington to the members of the Committee and she advised the
Committee the Municipality of Clarington is in the process of compiling
data for the Group Housing room to be established at the Animal Shelter.
Mary Jane provided the Committee with a copy and a brief overview of the
Group Housing Policy in its draft form. Ms. Bacon advised the Committee
the Group Housing Policy still has areas that require further investigation
and will try to have a finalized policy in the near future. She outlined the
pre-assessment which will be performed on the cats before they would be
placed in the group housing room and the guidelines the Animal Shelter
would be following with regards to the group housing of cats. Ms. Bacon
briefly described the on-going monitoring as well as the procedures for
removal of the cats from the group housing area, sanitation and ventilation
of the group housing area. She will visit the Newmarket Shelter and
obtain information from them on how they implemented the Group
Housing room in their facility. Ms. Bacon welcomed any relevant input
from the Committee which they feel should be included in this policy. The
Animal Advisory Committee -2- November 12, 2008
members confirmed a maximum of 8 cats in the area, and two litter boxes
should be sufficient, with more to be added if necessary. As well, it was
resolved that the best approach to populating the group room is to identify
up to 8 cats that are suitable and not add any additional cats until the
group is depleted (i.e. adopted or transferred out).
3. QUARTERLY REPORTS
Anne provided the Committee with copies of the Quarterly Reports
covering the period of January to September 2008, and commented on
the statistics.
4. SANTA PHOTOS
Anne informed the Committee the Santa Photos will be held on Saturday,
December 6, 2008. Jon Stoner agreed to be Santa and Anne has
contacted the local high school to see if the students in photography class
would be interested in taking the photographs. Anne asked if there were
any members of the Committee who would like to volunteer at this event.
Laurie and Rhonda volunteered their time.
5. 2009 LICENSING CAMPAIGN UPDATE
Anne advised the Committee the contract for door-to-door licensing has
expired and a new tender will be reissued. There will be a mobile hand
unit to issue licenses, similar to the unit used to issue parking tickets and
the information can be uploaded into the Shelterbuddy program. Anne
stated the Municipality of Clarington is looking into sending a mail-out to
residents which will allow for residents to apply for licenses through the
mail.
