REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE MEETING OF JUNE 17, 1985. CD-24-85 - File: 56.12.99. SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR AN INCREASE IN RATES BY LOCAL TAXICAB COMPANIES RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: 1. That this report be received; and 2. That Bowmanville Taxi and Deluxe Taxi be granted an increase in the Tariff of Rates as detailed in the body of this report and the by-law appended hereto; and 3. That the by-law authorizing an increase in rates be forwarded to Council for approval. BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: A joint request for fee increases was submitted by Bowmanville Taxi and Deluxe Taxi by letter dated May 24th 1985. Council received the correspondence at their meeting of June 10th 1985, and referred it to staff for review and a report to the General Purpose and Administration Committee. Staff reviewed the request and surveyed the area municipalities to establish what the current Tariff of Rates for taxi services were. The findings were as follows: Continued ...../2 S~ ~~~-~ CD-24-85 -2- v7 - 1 la,) June 17, 1985 City of Oshawa - 1st 333 metres $ 1.50 each additional 333 metres or part thereof .30 Town of Whitby - initial flag drop $ 1.30 each additional 1/9th km .10 Town of Ajax - 1st 1/9th km $ 1.30 each additional 1/9th km .10 Town of Pickering - 1st 1/9th km $ 1.2D each additional 1/9th km .10 Town of Newcastle - 1st 10th km or part thereof $ .75 each additional 1/0th km or part thereof .075 (By-law 83-33 also contained reference to the Tariff of Rates for charges by the mile.} All vehicles currently in service are late model and have odometers that measure distance in kilometers. This reference has been deleted from the proposed amendment. An increase in taxi rates was last considered and approved in February1983. Having regard for the costs associated with the operation of motor vehicles, the increase requested is competitive and in line with rates charged in other jurisdictions in Durham Region. In the event that the increase is approved, the by-law amendment which would give effect to the application has been rewritten (copy attached), and contains in Section 3, reference to the effective date of July 2nd 1985. This will provide the operators with a week's grace and allow them to have the taxi meters re-calibrated. to reflect the new rates. Respectfully submitted, David W. Oakes, B.A., A.M.C.T., Town Clerk.
