Minutes of a meeting of the Animal Advisory Committee held on
Wednesday April 21, 2004 at 2:30 P.M. at the Animal Shelter

Marie Knight Stanley Chaired this first meeting of the Animal Advisory
Committee.
1. INTRODUCTIONS
Introductions were done as this is the first meeting of the new
Committee for the term of 2004-2006.
2. MANUALS
Marie reviewed the contents of the agenda package that the committee
received which included: Background information on the formation and
mandate of the Animal Advisory Committee, Policies and Procedures
manual, the Responsible Pet Owners By-Law, Protocol for Council –
Appointed Advisory Committee and the Achievements of the Animal
Services Staff and Animal Advisory Committee.
3. CHAIR AND VICE-CHAIR
Election of the positions for Chair and Vice-Chair will be held at the
next meeting (June 9, 2004).

4. SCHEDULED MEETINGS FOR 2004-2006
The committee agreed to meet every second Wednesday of every
second month at 2:30 p.m. alternating locations between the Animal
Shelter and the Municipal Administrative Centre - Council Ante room.
A list of scheduled meetings for 2004-2006 is attached hereto and
forms part of these minutes.
5. DOG BITE PREVENTION
Sheila circulated a Dog Bite Prevention flyer for the committee’s
review.

7. OTHER BUSINESS
Marie circulated a copy of the presentation to Council on January 27,
2003, by Liz White, Director of Animal Alliance of Canada, wherein she
praised the achievements of the Clarington Animal Shelter in co-
operation with Staff and Council.
Councillor Foster volunteered to contact veterinarians to determine if
anyone would be interested in sitting on the committee.

OTHER BUSINESS (CONTINUED)
Marie asked the committee if they had any areas of concern that they
would like the committee to review over the term.
Kathleen mentioned that she would like the committee to have a look
at spaying and neutering dogs and cats.
Charmaine would like the committee to delve into locating off leash
areas for pets along major highways within the Municipality of
Clarington. She also mentioned a good website to help pet owners
locate pet friendly rest stops and hotels for those who have their pets
travel with them. The website is www.petsarewelcome.com
