HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-11-13 Minutes i ANIMAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE Minutes of a meeting of the Animal Advisory Committee held on Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at the Animal Shelter ROLL CALL Present: Colleen Cochrane Laurie Davis, Durham Animal Adoption Sheila Elkington, Sr. Animal Services Officer Dr. J. Holt Don MacArthur, Councillor Tara Stocker Nick VanSeggelen Donna MacKay, Secretary Absent Were: Peter Klose, Animal Cat World Marie Knight Stanley, Deputy Clerk Dr. Bill Mingram Nick VanSeggelen chaired the meeting. 1. ADOPTION OF MINUTES Moved by Don MacArthur, seconded by Laurie Davis THAT the minutes of a regular meeting of the Animal Advisory Committee held on September 10, 2002 be approved. "CARRIED" 2. PHOTOS WITH SANTA— DECEMBER 8TH Photos with Santa will be held at Pet Smart on Sunday, December 8th and require volunteers to help with this event. Tara and Nick have agreed to volunteer from 10 — 2 and Laurie from 2 — 5. 3. FUNDRAISING FOR SHELTER — REPORT CLD-48-02 Family Safety Day: Clarington Emergency Services invited the Clarington Animal Shelter to man a booth at their annual Family Safety Day. Mary Jane Bacon, her son and Colleen from the Committee manned the booth. The display was extremely well attended and staff distributed approximately 400 colouring books and pamphlets. Animal Advisc,, _ November 13, 2002 Pet Valu BBQ: Also on September 28, 2002 there was the Pet Valu Barbeque. A member of Staff, Karen Lyle, along with a co-op student attended for the purpose of raising funds for the Clarington Animal Shelter. Local artist, Pat Livingston donated posters for sale at this event and the proceeds were also donated to the Animal Shelter. 4. PURCHASE OF COMBINATION 19" TV/VCR TVNCR for Shelter was purchased for in house education sessions and to be utilized in Shelter tours. Beaver group attended Shelter on November 9th and a picture was circulated to committee of the group and of the items donated from the group. There is also a Girl Guide Group interested in a tour of the Shelter. 5. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Sheila circulated a picture of new awnings at the Shelter and also noted that the new cat cages will arrive within the month. Discussions were held regardinq the Oshawa Humane Society and how it is run. There is a report going to the December 2na GP&A explaining. They are totally dependent on fundraising events and receive no money from head office. Any ideas for fundraising events for the Oshawa Humane Society would be greatly appreciated. Sheila mentioned the Humane Society have fundraising events already listed for which anyone may volunteer their help. Sheila will find out when these events are occurring. 6. OTHER BUSINESS Colleen stated she is still not sure the public knows what the Shelter does. Sheila will draft an information sheet explaining Animal Shelter services for the committee. Discussion was held whether to place in-tax bills for distribution but will have to have approval. Dr. Holt interested in what the committee's mandate will be from now on. Discussion was held and mandate will be responsible dog/cat ownership and get the word out to the residents. Moved by Don MacArthur, seconded by Dr. Holt THAT the committee draft a brochure of responsible pet ownership and shelter services within Municipality of Clarington.
