4. Sub-Committee Reports
Maintenance
The bird houses have been reinstalled and are already being occupied.
After the snow melt, there is a lot of garbage that needs to get picked up; perhaps more
than the maintenance sub-committee can do by themselves.
Jennifer will ask Operations if the SWNA is one of the sites for Pitch-In Week this year.
(Note: Operations has confirmed that the SWNA will be one of the locations for the
public to clean on Saturday April 26 between 9:00 AM and Noon. The meeting point is
the Toronto Street parking lot)
Some of the soil around the trees planted last year has settled and needs to be compacted
or filled in with more soil. Peter will check the trees and advise on the best course of
action.
A second garbage can at the Toronto Street parking lot is needed. Operations will be
asked to provide an extra one.
Jim Cleland reports that dumping is occurring in the he MNR parking lot off of
Cobbledick Road. MNR will be notified of the problem.
An old waterbed that was removed from the east side of the SWNA in the fall is still
sitting on the side of the road by Toronto Street. Operations will be asked to pick it up.
5. Updates
MNR Rangers 2008 Projects
The Municipality has the opportunity to make use of the MNR Rangers again this year.
They will be available to work at the SWNA for 2 or 3 days in a row. Projects that they
may be able to assist with are: the woodchip trail on the east side of the creek, asphalt
repairs on paved trails, weeding and covering with filter fibre around the benches and
signs. During the next meeting,to be held on site, the Committee will decide where they
will be best utilized.
Wild About Wetlands
Final details about this upcoming event were discussed in order to complete the
advertising. A draft of the poster was circulated to the committee. Revisions will be
made based on the comments received at the meeting and then copies will be made for
distribution. Clarington This Week has promised to print an article in the paper prior to
the event. Kerry has volunteered to approach the Orono Times to see if they are able to
offer something similar. Also, Joe will contact KX96 about having a free radio ad run.
OFAH TackleShare Program
By e-mail Greg Wells reports that the TackleShare program may not run this year. Their
sponsor has pulled out and they have not found a new sponsor yet.
Jim Kamstra volunteered his stocked pond at his nursery in Taunton as an alternative for
a fishing event. While the Committee was very appreciative of his offer, it was decided
not to host an off-site event.
PowerPoint Presentation
David Best and John Stoner will be presenting to the Solina Women’s Institute at the
th
Solina community hall on Wednesday May 14. A laptop and a projector is required, as
neither the institute nor the hall has one. Councillor Woo volunteered to lend them his
equipment to use for the evening.
