ADOPTION OF MINUTES Moved by Julia Holt, seconded by Laurie Davis THAT the minutes of a regular meeting of the Animal Advisory Committee held on March 12, 2002 be approved. "CARRIED" 2a. RENTAL OF SANTA SUITS Tim's Rentals has Santa suits for rent if we decide to participate in the Photo with Santa Program. Can also borrow suit from Social Committee. Laurie offered her Santa Suit as well. 2b. MICROCHIP CLINIC Dr. Mingram forwarded a document which stated that the CVO see microchipping as a veterinary procedure. If we were only doing our own animals there would not be a problem, however, to microchip other people's animals the CVO would require that a veterinarian would be on site during the clinic. We would have to notify all the local Animal Hospitals, two weeks in advance that we were holding a clinic and we would also need to get a waiver from the CVO stating that we would not be performing any examinations on the animals and that the event was being held at a non accredited facility. Animal Advisory Committee - 2 - April 10, 2002 3. OTHER BUSINESS Sheila — Pet Adoption at Pet Smart May 4t" and 5t". Looking for volunteers to help out —Tara volunteered for Saturday and Nick volunteered for Sunday. Sheila suggested submitting a letter/photo to newspaper regarding Pet Ownership Week in May. Julia — Interested in By-law Enforcement regarding free running dogs. Suggested composing a letter to publish in papers informing dog owners that they are legally liable for any injuries or damages caused by their dog while they run at large. Could combine with Responsible Pet Ownership Week. Animal Enforcement Officers may give warning to owners of free running dogs and they can be fined $130.00. Julia also concerned about puppy mills. Suggestions were made to run Press Releases regarding these subjects making residents aware of the situation. Humane Society can be called if puppy mills are suspected in area. However, as long as there is food, water and shelter there is very little they can do. If we can get the message to the purchaser of these dogs that this is an unhealthy environment, than maybe something can be done. Julia would also be interested in hosting a Canine Good Neighbour Testing Clinic. Orono is hosting one in June. Peter mentioned the exotic pet by-law and after discussion and response from the municipality's lawyer, it was decided not to amend the by-law because of liability issues. 4. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 3:05 p.m. NEXT MEETING TUESDAY, MAY 14, 2:00 —ANTE ROOM Chair Donna MacKay, Secretary
