HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-06-13 Minutes ANIMAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE Minutes of a meeting of the Animal Advisory Committee held on Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. in the Ante Room ROLL CALL Present Were: Mary Jane Bacon Colleen Cochrane Laurie Davis, Durham Animal Adoption Councillor Don MacArthur Marie Knight Stanley Tara Stocker Donna MacKay, Secretary Absent Were: Dr. Julia Holt Peter Klose Dr. Bill Mingram Paul Spencer Nick VanSeggelen Marie Knight Stanley chaired the meeting 1. ADOPTION OF MINUTES Moved by Tara Stocker, seconded by Laurie Davis That the minutes of the regular meeting of the Animal Advisory Committee held on May 9, 2001 be approved. "CARRIED" 2. LETTER FROM MRS. LaMARCHE — CAT LICENCING Letter was discussed with the Committee and Councillor Don MacArthur noted that a collection had been made among the Members of Council and the matter has been resolved. 3. LETTER— PAUL SPENCER A letter was sent to Paul Spencer regarding his appointment to the Animal Advisory Committee. If we do not hear from him by the end of June, another member will be appointed. Animal Advisory Committee - 2 - June 13, 2001 4. VICIOUS DOG DECLARATIONS Three reports went to Council regarding Vicious Dog Declarations —Trotman, Stacey and Bayliss. The declarations were upheld for 6 months. Staff will be introducing a new form and process for the Fall. When investigating, staff will speak to both sides and also witnesses. Municipality will get a legal opinion regarding the liability dealing with these issues. The option of changing the name of the "Vicious Dog Declaration" to "Order to Restraint" is being reviewed. 5. UNFINISHED BUSINESS - Approval was given to approach individual Principals at the local Public/Separate Schools regarding the Dog Bite Prevention program. Donna will contact Peter Klose to provide a list of schools which would be receptive to this type of a program. Committee will approach schools third week of September. Colleen is working on acquiring the use of St. John's Ambulance dogs for presentation. Mary Jane has done presentations in the past and would be willing to help out. - Committee to come up with a procedure and a message to send to the Principals. An e-mail will be sent to all schools with the same message and followed up with a phone call. The Dog Bite Presentation will be approximately '/ hour. - Committee reviewed Dog Bite Prevention Flyer and was very impressed. Committee to call Donna within a week with any other changes. Marie will obtain a price from a printer for reproduction. Looking at printing approximately 4,000 copies. Colleen will hand out pamphlets at Apple Fest and also have the donation jar available. - Donations to the Animal Shelter have amounted to $15,000.00 within the past 4 years. There must be a report to Council to access the account or be included in the budget. - Pet Smart Charities Adoption Weekend will be held Friday, June 22nd Saturday, June 23rd. and Sunday, June 24t". Volunteers needed. Colleen volunteered for Friday evening and part of Saturday. Tara volunteered for Saturday and Marie volunteered for Sunday. - Committee agreed to recess for summer. 6. NEXT MEETING Next meeting will be held in September. Donna will advise dates and times. Committee looking at alternating days so Dr. Mingram can attend every two months.
