Animal Advisory Committee - 2 - May 9, 2001
4. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Councillor MacArthur reported on his contact with Bob Wilsher, Board of
Education and stated Mr. Wilsher thought it would be a good idea to approach
the principals of each school in Clarington individually regarding the Pet
Education Program. John Leith, Principal of Waverley Public School was to
attend a meeting with the School Board and was going to mention the program at
this meeting. Mr. Leith suggested the committee prepare an outline as to how
we are going to proceed, what age group to target and what method we are
proposing for this program. The Committee will also approach the Separate
School Board.
Committee to work with School Board to come up with appropriate dates to
proceed. Committee felt it was going to be too hectic to approach Schools by
June.
Committee felt we should proceed with the Dog Bite Prevention Program before
summer. Sheila suggested approaching the Summer Day Camps run through
the Municipality. Don MacArthur will approach Mayor for approval. Committee
will also approach the Library Board.
Sheila stated no dates have been confirmed with PetSmart as yet. Will notify
when she has confirmation, probably sometime in June. Once date is
established, volunteers will be needed. Colleen, Tara and Marie volunteered
their time.
Dog Bite Prevention Flyer was discussed and all felt was a good idea to use the
brochure with some minor changes. We have the original disc in our possession
but is not compatible with our system. Disc is being looked at now to see if it can
be used and if not Peter Klose will rebuild on his system. Will also approach
internal staff for assistance.
Sheila, Mary Jane and Colleen were nominated to do the presentation.
5. OTHER BUSINESS
Peter— sent letter to John O'Toole's office requesting legislation from the
Provincial level to exclude exotic animals in residential areas. Peter handed out
a response from O'Toole's office suggesting it was a municipal matter along with
a sample of an Exotic Pet By-law from Port Colborne for committee to review.
Don — a Resolution was passed at Council regarding the OSPCA Act. Queen's
Park will review, changing legislation to allow our Animal Services officers legal
authority to enter private property to rescue animals.
A couple of issues were brought up regarding Animal Services but they had
already be addressed.
Animal Advisory Committee - 3 - May 9, 2001
Sheila — circulated pictures of "before" and "after" of a neglected stray cocker
Spanie rescued by Clarington Animal Services and groomed free of
charge by Ruth Ann Miller of"And Puppy Dog Tails".
Nick— mentioned seeing a program on TV regarding "dogs helping with people
hard of hearing", found it to be very interesting and educational.
