ADOPTION OF MINUTES Moved by Councillor Hooper, seconded by K. Meydam THAT the minutes of the meeting held on April 28, 2008 be adopted. “CARRIED” 2. CEMETERY MAINTENANCE J. Bate advised that he has contacted all of the individuals who have been performing the maintenance on the cemeteries and all are willing to continue for 2009, with the exception that Steve Barrie will be looking after Providence Cemetery rather than Alex Barrie Moved by K. Meydam, seconded by D. Pickett THAT the individuals who provide maintenance at the various abandoned cemeteries receive a 3 percent increase in their fees from last year. “CARRIED” Moved by D. Pickett, seconded by K. Meydam THAT Terry Maye be remunerated in the amount of $100 per year plus the 3 percent increase for the maintenance of the Brown Family Cemetery. “CARRIED” T. Maye stated a disclosure of pecuniary interest and did not vote on the previous motions. Clarington Abandoned - 2 - April 4, 2009 Cemeteries Board In the fall of 2008, Roger Brown (the Municipality’s weed contractor) cleaned the Nay & Staples Cemetery and set the field stones up outside of the cemetery area. The Committee will determine if further work is required. The Boy Scout group, under the direction of Hugh Coutts, has agreed to continue with the maintenance of the Smith Family Cemetery. The Municipality will attempt to contact the property owner of the McNeile/Elliott/ Ede Cemetery. 3. CEMETERY TOUR A tour of the cemeteries will be arranged for May 27, 2009, commencing at 4:00 p.m. from the Municipal Administrative Centre. John Bate will arrange for a bus. 4, BILL 149 The Committee was advised of a petition which is being submitted to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario with respect to Bill 149, Inactive Cemeteries Protection Act, 2009, to prohibit the relocation of inactive cemeteries in the Province of Ontario. Moved by Councillor Hooper, seconded by D. Pickett THAT the Council of the Municipality of Clarington be requested to endorse the following resolution: “WHEREAS Ontario’s cemeteries are an important part of our cultural heritage; AND WHEREAS Ontario’s inactive cemeteries are constantly at risk of closure and removal; AND WHEREAS Ontario’s cemeteries are an irreplaceable part of the province’s cultural heritage; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Council of the Municipality of Clarington hereby petitions the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to pass Bill 149, Inactive Cemeteries Protection Act, 2009, to prohibit the relocation of inactive cemeteries in the Province of Ontario.” “CARRIED” Clarington Abandoned - 3 - April 4, 2009 Cemeteries Board 5.
