SUMMARY REPORT: SMALL BUSINESS SEMINAR
Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report PD-112-92 be received for information; and
2. THAT Council thank Mr. Peter Hobb for his valuable
contribution to the Small Business Seminar.
REPORT:
1. On April 28, 1992, a Small Business Seminar was held at the
Bowmanville Recreation Complex. This seminar was organized
by the Town and is one of the Town's local Economic
2. The seminar was advertised in local newspapers and thirty-
one (31) local residents attended the seminar.
3. The guest speakers are:
Mr. Norman Rolfe, Service Business Consultant with the
Ministry of Industry, Trade and Technology
Mr. Peter Hobb, a local chartered accountant with
Sutherland, Hobb and Partners
4. The speakers focused on pros and cons of starting a small
business, including information on start up, franchising,
loan programs as well as financial matters.

5. Feedbacks from the participants are excellent and they rated
the seminar above average.
6. Small businesses are responsible for creating 90% of the new
job opportunity in ontario and the Town recognizes that
small business is the backbone of the local economy. The
small business seminar is a valuable tool to promote local
entrepreneurship which is vital to a healthy local economy.
7. The Department has many information and documents pertaining
to starting a small business and are available to members of
Council and the general public.
8. Mr. Peter Hobb has volunteered his time to speak at the
seminar during the most hectic time of his practice.
Despite presenting a small gift to Mr. Hobb for his help,
staff recommend that a Council resolution to thank him would
be in order.
