TOURIST AND GENERAL INFORMATION CENTRE
TOWN OF NEWCASTLE
Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report PD-140 -92 be received for information.
REPORT:
1. On May 22, 1990, the Town of Newcastle Tourist and General
Information Centre was opened within the Flying Dutchman
property. This Centre is opened year-round and provides
general information on the Town of Newcastle to the public
and assists tourists in Obtaining directions or information
on various tourist attractions. As well, many local
businesses were given display space to promote their
businesses on a monthly basis.
2. During the period of May to the end of August, there are two
(2) summer students employed at the Tourist Centre as the
hours of operation are extended to 8:00 p.m. Monday to
Friday and open weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The
majority of visitors attend the Centre during those months.
3. During the months of May to December, 1990, 4,258 persons
visited the Centre. In 1991, 4,940 persons visited the
Centre, an increase of approximately 700 persons. The

Tourist Centre was closed for renovations during the months
of October and November.
4. Many different types of souveniers are sold at the Tourist
Centre including key chains, coffee mugs, travel mugs,
scarves, ties, t-shirts, hats, spoons, pens, canvas bags and
lighters. Postcards and maps are available as well. It
should be noted that all souveniers are sold at cost.
5. Staff is pleased with the number of visitors that have
passed through the Tourist and General Information Centre.
As more residents and tourist become aware of its location,
Staff anticipate an increase in visitor attendance for 1992.
