NEWCASTLE & DISTRICT RECREATION FACILITY Present: David Kelly, Chair Sally Barrie Sylvia Jaspers-Fayer Elaine Simpson Councillor Ron Hooper (left at 6:10 p.m.) Also Present: Patti Barrie, Municipal Clerk Ellen Atkinson, Recording Secretary Absent: Darlene Matthews Keith Brettell 1. ADOPTION OF MINUTES Moved by Sally Barrie, seconded by Elaine Simpson THAT the minutes of the meeting held on November 5, 2008 be approved. “CARRIED” 2. NEW BUSINESS a) Tour of Newcastle & District Recreation Facility George Acorn, Facilities Manager, Municipality of Clarington provided the Committee with a tour of the Newcastle & District Recreation Facility and highlighted those features which enhance accessibility. He informed the Committee that any issues brought to his attention with regards to accessibility will be addressed and rectified, if possible. The Committee identified some concerns as follows: ? Lack of push buttons on some interior doors. ? Hooks should be lowered in change rooms. ? Shower head is the accessible area should be a different style (telephone). ? Raised floors near the showers should be highlighted. ? The Sauna/Spa is inaccessible. ? The benches in the gym change rooms should be raised. b) Accessibility Challenge It was suggested that the Newcastle Accessibility Challenge be rescheduled for the spring. David Kelly suggested the Committee host an Accessibility Challenge at Clarington Central Secondary School. The Committee will discuss this at the next meeting. Clarington Accessibility - 2 - December 2, 2008 Advisory Committee c) Site Plan Reviews The Committee reviewed site plans for Shoeless Joes Restaurant, a storage warehouse and 25/27 King Street West & 29/31 King Street West. 3. OTHER BUSINESS a) Correspondence from Pat Madill, Regional Clerk – Regarding Bill 94: Social Assistance Statutes Law Amendment Act (Registered Disability Savings Plans) Moved by Sally Barrie, seconded by Elaine Simpson THAT we recommend to Council that the following resolution of the Regional Municipality of Durham be endorsed: “a) THAT Durham Region Council supports Bill 94: b) THAT staff be directed to write a letter to the Minister of Community and Social Services indicating such support, and attaching a copy of Report #2008-A-43: and c) THAT a copy of the letter and Report #2008-A-43 be forwarded to the Premier of Ontario, Durham’s MPPs, area municipalities and area Accessibility Advisory Committees.” “CARRIED” b) Correspondence from Scott Pigden, Chairperson, Oshawa Accessibility Advisory Committee – Regarding Accessibility within the MPP Offices throughout Ontrio Moved by Sylvia Jaspers-Fayer, seconded by Sally Barrie THAT a letter be sent to Jerry Ouellette, MPP Oshawa, thanking him for acknowledging the accessibility issue at his office and resolving the issue. “CARRIED” c) Accessible Pedestrian Signals Policy and Guide to Best Practice – The Regional Municipality of Durham David Kelly will provide pictures of pedestrian cross walks in Uxbridge that have a longer time period to allow pedestrians to cross. Clarington Accessibility - 3 - December 2, 2008 Advisory Committee d) Durham Accessibility Chairs’ Meetings David requested that the Durham Regional Accessibility Committee Chairs schedule their meetings in the evenings instead of the afternoon. 4. DATE OF NEXT MEETING The next meeting will be held on January 6, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in Committee Room 1A. 5.
