MEETING ROOM 1A Present: David Kelly, Chair Sally Barrie Keith Brettell Sylvia Jaspers-Fayer Corine Goodwin Councillor Ron Hooper Absent: Elaine Simpson, Vice-Chair Also Present: Patti Barrie, Municipal Clerk 1. ADOPTION OF MINUTES Moved by Sally Barrie, seconded by Sylvia Jaspers-Fayer THAT the minutes of the meeting held on May 5, 2009 be approved. “CARRIED” 2. BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES OF LAST MEETING a) Accessibility Advisory Committee Regional Forum – Report Sylvia reported that she very much enjoyed the opportunity to attend the Accessibility Advisory Committee Regional Forum. She spent the day with representatives from Oshawa and the Region of Durham. She found the Forum very informative and brought back a variety of resources which she offered to share with the Committee Members. Sylvia noted that the City of Oshawa ensures that a Planner is in attendance while the Committee reviews draft site plans. Sylvia thanked the Committee for the privilege of attending this worthwhile day. b) DREN Gala – Report Councillor Hooper and David Kelly advised that on May 25th they attended the Durham Region Employment Network (DREN) held the EmployABILITY Awards Gala at the Tosca Banquet Hall in Oshawa. Good Life Bowmanville and Dewey’s Cafe both received awards. Clarington Accessibility - 2 - June 2, 2009 Advisory Committee 3. NEW BUSINESS a) Accessibility - Customer Service Standard – Training Update Anne advised that a series of training sessions have been held for full-time municipal staff. Additional sessions will be held for part-time staff. The next phase of training will be for our third-party contractors. b) Correspondence – Town of Whitby – Planning Department Report – Initial Proposed Employment Accessibility Standard This correspondence was provided to the committee for information purposes. c) Correspondence – AMO Member communication – Push for Successful Implementation of AODA This correspondence was provided to the committee for information purposes. d) Sidewalks – New Design Standards David reported that the new design for sidewalks has been incorporated at the new Newcastle and District Recreation Complex. He commented that Norm Hannan would have been very pleased to know that his desire for improved sidewalks has come to fruition. It was agreed that Kim Anderson, Norm’s daughter, should be invited to the opening ceremonies in Norm’s honour. 4. DATE OF NEXT MEETING The next meeting will be held on September 8, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in Committee Room 1A. Clarington Accessibility - 3 - June 2, 2009 Advisory Committee 5.
