1. ADOPTION OF MINUTES
Moved by Keith Brettell, seconded by Sally Barrie
THAT the minutes of the meeting held on April 7, 2009 be approved.

2. BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES OF LAST MEETING
a) List for Site Plan Review
Keith and Sylvia comprised a draft list of items for the Committee to
review. The list will be complied into a checklist and provided to Keith and
Sylvia for future site plan reviews.
Sally, on behalf of the other Committee members, thanked Keith and
Sylvia for all their efforts in compiling the review checklist.
b) Town of Whitby Presentation – Full Service Gas Stations
A copy of the presentation was provided to the members. This
presentation was a follow up to a resolution passed earlier this year. The
presentation was from a member of the Canadian Petroleum Products
Institute. He provided history on gas stations and highlighted some
accessibility enhancements with regards to the Self Service Gas Stations
such as: wheelchair/walker accessibility to convenience stores attached to
the gas stations, dedicated parking spaces, washrooms better adapted for
persons with disabilities, wider aisles, and pay at the pump and pumps are
now being designed with the buttons lowered. He noted there are
concerns that still need to be addressed which included: standard canopy
signage Canada wide, displays blocking the entrances to stores/pay
counters and the calling of 24 hours in advance if person requires

assistance at the pumps. Many gas stations have there accessibility
statements on their websites and he noted there is still much work to do to
be in compliance for 2012.
c) Customer Service Standards – Feedback Brochures
The Committee was supplied with a copy of the Municipality of Clarington
Feedback Procedure for information. Feedback forms will be made
available in every facility and the website. The intent is to respond to the
feedback within three business days. A representative from each
department is on the Committee. Staff training will take place next week.
Any concerns with regards to accessibility issues within the Municipality of
Clarington will be forwarded to the Clerk’s Department, and the Clerk’s
Department will prepare a report on a quarterly basis stating the issues
brought forward. This report will be provided to the Accessibility Advisory
Committee and to Council.
3. NEW BUSINESS
a) Accessibility Advisory Committee Regional Forum – June 1, 2009
The Committee was advised of the upcoming Accessibility Advisory
Committee Regional Forum scheduled for June 1, 2009 at the Metro
Toronto Convention Centre. The last date for registration is May 21, 2009
and if there are any members interested in attending they need to contact
Ellen Atkinson, Clerk’s Department prior to May 21, 2009.
b) John Kiru, Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas
A copy of the presentation done by John Kiru, Toronto Association of
Business Improvement Areas was provided to the Committee for
information. Committee members who attended this presentation
commented on how informative it was. Patti stated Mr. Kiru has offered to
provide another presentation in the future.
c) Accessibility Expo – Breaking Down Barriers
The Committee was informed of the arrangement being made by the
Accessibility Committee Coordinators’ from Whitby and Ajax for a forum
being held at Durham College. This event is scheduled for May or June
2010. They are required to prepare a business plan before they can
proceed.
d) DREN –Gala – May 25, 2009 – TOCSA Hall
Municipality of Clarington has nominated GoodLife Fitness, Bowmanville
for the Accessibility Award. Nominee’s who where chosen as recipients of
the awards have been informed. Ken Shaw, CTV News will be the Master

of Ceremony for this event. Patti will order two tickets for the Committee,
if members are interested in attending they need to contact Patti.
e) Other
It was confirmed by staff from the Engineering Department that indeed the
construction on King Street was impeding the sidewalk. This has been
addressed and the problem has been rectified.

The next meeting will be held on June 2, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in Committee Room
