1. INTRODUCTION OF NEW MEMBER
Corneila (Corrine) Goodwin was introduced to the Committee.
2. ADOPTION OF MINUTES
Moved by Sally Barrie, seconded by Sylvia Jaspers-Fayer
THAT the minutes of the meeting held on March 3, 2009 be approved.

3. BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES OF LAST MEETING
a) Accessibility Challenge – Update
John Gayle, Special Education Department Head, Clarington Central
Secondary School confirmed that the school would be very interested in
participating with the proposed Accessibility Challenge. He stated this
challenge would be offered to the students who participate in the
leadership classes at Clarington Central and he will contact the
municipality to arrange for a date for the Challenge to take place.
Sylvia, on behalf of the other Committee members, thanked David and
Keith for all their efforts in compiling the Accessibility Challenge.
b) Customer Service Standards – Verbal Update from Patti
Patti stated the Customer Service Standards Staff Committee had its initial
meeting and the Consultants provided a presentation. The Customer
Service Standards Staff Committee is now working on policies and
procedures and these will be presented at the next Accessibility Advisory
meeting scheduled for May 5, 2009.

4. NEW BUSINESS
a) Accessibility Challenge Update
This was discussed under Section 3 of the Agenda.
b) DREN Gala – Accessibility Award Nominations
Moved by Keith Brettell, seconded by Elaine Simpson
THAT GoodLife Fitness be nominated or the DREN Accessibility Award.

c) Site Plan Review Sub-Committee Update
Keith Brettell and Sylvia Jasper-Fayer met with Carlo Pellarin and Lisa
Backus, Planning Services Department to review the site plans for the
renovation of the IGA store in Newcastle which is being converted to a
Sobeys. Keith and Sylvia stated the recommendations from the
Accessibility Advisory Committee regarding site plans are valued and are
informative comments for the Planning Services Department. They will
comprise a list of items pertaining to accessibility issues to be used for site
plan reviews and this list will be presented to the Committee at the next
meeting for review and comments from other members.
d) Memo – Bruce Taylor, Corporate Safety and Project Manager – Regarding
Newcastle Branch Library – Barrier Free Access
A copy of a Memo from Bruce Taylor was provided to the Committee
thanking the Committee for the contribution towards the cost of the supply
and installation of the push buttons for the Newcastle Library and inviting
the Committee to attend the Official Opening planned for October 3, 2009
where the Committee will be formally recognized for their contribution.
e) OTHER
David Kelly enquired as to whether or not the canopy over the units
affected by the fire on King Street is in violation of any Municipal By-laws,
being that it impedes the sidewalk, making it difficult for persons with
accessibility issues to manoeuvre around the posts of the canopy.
A copy of an email from Michele Cotton, Accessibility Coordinator, Town
of Whitby was provided to the Committee wherein she invited members to
attend their Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting scheduled for

Tuesday April 14from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., where a presentation from
the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute regarding Full-Service Gas

Stations will be made. Anyone interested should contact Patti and she will
forward the names on to Michele Cotton.
4. DATE OF NEXT MEETING
The next meeting will be held on May 5, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in Committee Room
1A.
