2. PRESENTATION
Susan Knox. Communications/911 Services Manager, Durham Regional Police
made a presentation to the Committee regarding 911 Dispatch texting. She
advised that the Canadian Radio -television Telecommunications Commission
has mandated that by January 24, 2014 all wireless service providers must be
compliant with the requirement that they can accept texts to 911 dispatchers.
This has been mandated on a national level. In order for texts to be received by
911, individuals must register with their service provider. After registering, if an
individual dials 911 they will receive a text back from the dispatch. The Region of
Durham is ready to implement the system and will be undertaking a publicity
campaign in 2014 to advise the general public.
The presentation was followed by a question and answer period.
