AND COMMENT 3.1 The reconstruction of this road. section provided an opportunity to improve traffic flow and safety with the o.o.~w~®.:~.~.. 1 12 2 REPORT NO.: WD-9-97 PAGE 2 installation of a centre turn lane from Liberty Street to Brown Street. There is one 4 m wide westbound lane and one 4 m wide eastbound lane combined with the 4 m wide centre turning lane between Liberty Street and Brown Street. Centre turn lanes can improve safety by providing a safe haven for turning vehicles and improve access to local businesses. 3.2 The section of King Street between Liberty Street and Mearns Avenue was provided with a centre turn lane during 1993 with very good public acceptance. Lane lines were painted and centre lane only turn signs were installed on the new section west of Liberty Street on November 19, 1996, again with very good acceptance from the public. 3.3 The installation of this centre turn lane requires formal approval by Council with an amendment to Consolidated Traffic By-law 91-58, Schedule XXXII "One-way Traffic Lanes". 4.0 CONCLUSIONS 4.1 From the above, it is concluded that the centre turn lane installed on King Street (Liberty Street to Ontario Street) during November 1996 will improve traffic flow and safety. It is recommended that a by-law amendment be formally approved by Council to recognize this centre turn lane. Respectfully submitted, ~~ C~ Stephen A. Vokes, P.Eng.
