TOWN OF NEWCASTLE June 29 1981 Minutes of a regular meeting of Council held on Monday, June 29 1981 at 9:30 a.m. in Court Room #2 Present were: Mayor Garnet B. Rickard Councillor Ann Cowman, at 10:05 a.m. Councillor Diane Hamre Councillor Marie Hubbard Councillor Maurice Prout, until 4:15 p.m. Councillor Bruce Taylor Councillor Edward R. Woodyard, until 1:30 p.m. Town Clerk, David W. Oakes Deputy Clerk, Gertrude E. Gray Director of Public Works, J. Dunham Director of Planning, D. Smith Treasurer, K. Fanning Also present: Mayor Rickard read a tribute to Terry Fox, who was made an Honorary Citizen of the Town of Newcastle when he ran through on his Marathon of Hope one year ago, and requested that the flags on the Town buildings be lowered to half mast. Resolution #C-710-81 Moved by Councillor Hubbard, seconded by Councillor Prout THAT the minutes of the Council meeting held on June 15 1981 be approved as read. "CARRIED" Pat Macdonnel and Peggy Moorhouse of the Village of Newcastle addressed Council with a request for the purchase of the Roman Catholic Church in Newcastle for a museum. The museum would portray the period from 1847 - 1877, highlighting the Masseys, Baldwins, Thomas Atkinson. Mrs. Macdonnel outlined financial and volunteer help available. She asked that the Town purchase the building initially at a cost of $48,000. Randy MacDonald and Patti Larmer were present relative to a student venture for the summer. Mr. MacDonald spoke to Council stating that they wished to operate an auction sale out of a building on Wellington Street, owned by Mr. John Rice. He explained that the participants would all be students who would be using the money they earned to further their education. He stated that he was a qualified auctioneer and the venture would be backed by his father, who ran ABC Auctions. . . .
