Ted Dionne introduced Craig Greentree, a member of the Durham Regional
Police Department who will be participating as a member of the Committee.
Discussion took place with respect to the hunting activities on the vacant land
located immediately east of Newtonville Public School. It was the consensus of
the Committee that the entire by-law should not be amended because of a few
isolated cases of hunting in undesirable areas. Rather, specific locations should
be laid out in the by-law as being areas in which hunting is prohibited.
Craig Greentree advised that he has not laid any firearms related charges since
1977. He has, however, laid many trespass and assault charges related to
fishing activities.
The Committee agreed that it is imperative for hunters to ensure they have
written permission from the landowners to be hunting on their property. It was
suggested that a media release in the fall would be a good public education tool.
Ted Dionne indicated that he had sent a

In order to properly understand the situation in Newtonville, the owner of the
vacant land will be invited to attend the next meeting of the Committee.
Discussion ensued on the use of snares as it appears that western Ontario will
soon allow the use of them.
The Municipal Clerk will call the next meeting after contacting the owner of the
Newtonville property and confirming an appropriate date.
HUNTING COMMITTEE MINUTES
The fifth meeting of the Hunting Committee was held at 3:30 p.m., May 5, 1999 in
Meeting Room #1.

Mitch Phinney, Ministry of Natural Resources
Arnot Wotten, Concerned Citizen attended the meeting at 3:45 p.m.
Ted Dionne, Staff Sergeant, Clarington Community Police Office
Patti Barrie, Municipal Clerk, Municipality of Clarington
Absent: Craig Greentree, Durham Regional Police Department
The meeting was called in order to discuss the situation of the property located
immediately east of Newtonville Public School. The landowner, Mr. Harold
Konopny, was present. Ted Dionne advised Mr. Konopny of the concerns which
have been brought forward to the Committee by a local resident, Mrs. Sharon
Steel, related to hunting activities on his property.
Mr. Konopny advised that he had previously provided permission for Mrs. Steel
to erect signage on his property stating hunting is prohibited. He is, however,
prepared to do whatever is necessary to improve the situation.
Discussion ensued with regard to the dot system (yellow and red) of property
identification. Red dots signify that trespassing is prohibited, yellow dots indicate
that some activities (which must be posted) are permissible on the subject lands.
Mr. Konopny indicated that it would be his preference to "red dot' the entire
property. Linda Lavender volunteered to assist Mr. Konopny with this endeavour.
The Committee decided that it should consider hunting concerns on various
properties as they arise, rather than addressing the entire municipality.
Therefore, the next meeting of the Committee will be at the call of the Chair.
