Mayor ~ .4-<-<-4 Lfl~w.~ Clerk ....... .' ~ ~~ '- (/~~~ PRESS RELEASE Decerrber 1, 1981. "- Recent allegations have been made by a fonrer employee about the conduct of the affairs in the Public Works Department of the Town of Newcastle and in particular the acti vi ties of the Director of Public Works and the Purchasing Agent. As a result of the allegations the Town caused an investigation to be made by the Durham Regional Police and the Town's auditors. These thorough investigations concluded that there is no evidence of any criminal acts by senior merrbers of the Public Works Department and Council is satisfied that the Director of Public Works and the Purchasing Agent have not acted dishonestly. However, the investigation has revealed that there is a ....... need for improvement in the management practices in the Public Works Department. The Town has already taken steps to initiate the rec.ornrendations made by the Town's auditors. Council, the Director of Public Works and the Purchasing Agent all recognize that in light of the damage which has occurred to existing working relationships it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for these gentlemen to continue in their present positions. Wi th mutual regret the Director of Public Works and the Purchasing Agent have tendered their resignations and the Town has accepted them. While Council is satisfied that, in virtually every particular, the allegations made were unfounded, it is determined to institute :irnrediately rrodern management practices and procedures such that there .......... can be no basis for suspicion to arise in the future. /1/_ --// /' -//7j.~ ... /7 /" / I~.!
