", By-Law # Date: APRIL 20, 1992 Report #: CS-17-92 File #: Subject: MARCH BREAK Recommendations: It is respectfully submitted that the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend the following to Council: 1. THAT Report No. CS-17-92 be received for information. 1.0 BACKGROUND: 1. 1 This year's "Ninth Annual March Break Bonanza" was again a success. Town of Newcastle youth had the opportunity to take part in a variety of recreational opportunities during their annual Spring break. 1.2 A total of 2,045 children took advantage of their extra leisure time by participating in the Town's March Break Programs. For public swims we had 1,040 participants recorded as well as 626 participants for public skates and 379 participants for specially organized events run by the Community Services Department. Programs, as outlined in Attachment lA' were developed in co-operation with the Visual Arts Centre and the Newcastle Public Library to provide educational, cultural and physical activities without a duplication of services. 2.0 STAFFING: 2.1 Staffing for this program was co-ordinated by Andrew Davey, a placement student from Durham College Sports Administration .. /2 () 'j~ [I HfCYCLfOI:t'\ PAPIER PAPEA~AECYCLE TH~ IS PRImED ON RECYCLED PAPER REPORT NO. CS-17-92 - 2 '- APRIL 20, 1992 program. Individual events were supervised and lead by aquatic staff, who were also on their March Break, some volunteers and two individuals from the Community service Order Program. 2.2 Special resource people were also involved in the packages to enhance the quality and variety of the programs. Resource people included Exotic Cat World staff, Visual Arts Centre instructors and Kortrite Conservation Centre staff. 3.0 BUDGET: 3.1 As in past years, the intent of this program is to provide opportunities through a break-even budget whereby the revenue collected for the program will offset direct expenses incurred. This objective was reached again this year with revenue slightly exceeding expenditures. 4.0 SUMMARY: 4.1 For 1993 the Department is currently recommending changes to our fee structure to allow for a family rate as well as including a week long sports, crafts and games session at the Bowmanville Recreation Complex. 4.2 The continued success and popularity of this annual event continues to reinforce staff's position that these programs are very important in providing opportunities to residents during this period of increased leisure time. \ Recommended for presentation to the Committ~e, /' (('\ ( y'j.'
