SEEDLING TREE PLANTING/ROTARY CLUB
Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report No. CS-12-92 be received for information.
1.0 BACKGROUND:
1.1 In April of 1991 the Community Services Department in
cooperation with the Rotary Club of Bowmanville sponsored and
assisted the Rotary Club with their International Rotary Club
Green Planet Earth Program. The scope of the program was to
plant seedling trees on lands suitable for naturalization
using school children and the Boy Scout organization. The
Town applied to the Ministry of Natural Resources and received
5,000 seedling trees free of cost which were subsequently
planted in Soper Creek Park with the assistance of school
children.
2.0 REPORT
2.1 Following completion of the 1991 planting, the Rotary Club
indicated satisfaction with the program and asked to continue
and expand the program to 25,000 seedling trees in 1992. The
1991 planting was a learning experience for both the Rotary
Club and the Town. Steps and commitment have been identified
and undertaken to allow for improved organization and smooth
running of an expanded program in years to come.

2.7 Local news media will be provided news releases and
invited to cover the event.
3.0 SUMMARY:
3.1 It is the intention of the Rotary Club and the Town staff
to have this program develop into an annual event.
Through the generosity of the Ministry of Natural
Resources, the Town and the Rotary club will continue to
receive the free seedling trees to carryon the program.
In addition to the obvious benefit to the Town, the
program benefits our Community by demonstrating and
teaching children conservation, team and citizenship
skills.
3.2 Members of Council are cordially invited to participate in all
three days. A personal invitation is being extended under
separate cover by the Rotary Club. Council's involvement is
encouraged and would be appreciated.
Respectfully submitted,
Recommended for presentation
