OSHAWA - WHITBY SALMON DERBY
Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report No. CS-11-92 be received;
2 THAT Council donate a gift certificate from Canadian Tire
corporation Associate store in Bowmanville as a prize to this
years 9th Annual Oshawa-Whitby This Week Salmon Derby Event
on behalf of the Town of Newcastle;
3. THAT the staff be authorized to purchase the gift
certificate in the amount of $200.00;
4. THAT the necessary funds be drawn from the Tourism/Economic
Development Account Number 7710-11111-0299; and
5. THAT Mr. Mike Hayakawa of Oshawa-Whitby This Week be informed
of Council's direction.
1.0 BACKGROUND:
1.1 In January of 1992 the Community Services Department received
communication from Mr. Mike Hayakawa of Oshawa-Whitby This
Week requesting if we would be able to again contribute a
prize for this years 9th Annual Oshawa-Whitby This Week Salmon
Derby (Attachment 1).
1.2 This years Salmon Derby will be held for a six week period
commencing June 6th, 1992 and ending July 18th, 1992.
Proceeds from this years event are to be donated towards the
Fishing For Kids Foundation and local sport fishing
enhancement programs.

2.0 SUMMARY:
2.1 Council has supported this event for the past four years by
donating a gift certificate of $200.00 each year. This money
goes into our local business and advertisement of the prize
is listed in the pre-derby supplement listing and regular
issues of Oshawa-Whitby This Week during the Derby. Staff are
recommending this gift certificate be purchased again for
donation as a prize on behalf of the Town of Newcastle.

On behalf of Oshawa-Whitby This Week Newspaper, I would like to thank you for
your interest and support in participating in last year's Oshawa-Whitby This Week
Salmon Derby.
We are writing to inform you that the ninth annual derby is scheduled to run from
June 6-July 18 inclusive.
We would like to know if you might be able to donate a prize, such as some of your flies,
to this year's event.
As in past years, major sponsorship, those who donate prizes valued at $1 ,000
in suggested retail, (or close to that value) will have their logos displayed on
this year's poster along with derby prize listing, which can be found in the
prederby supplement and listings during regular issues of This Week newspaper.
Others will receive mention in the prize list, which can be found in the prederby
supplement listing and regular issues of our paper during the derby.
The derby will be run as a six-week mini weekly event with prizes divided evenly into
three categories consisting of chinook salmon, rainbow trout and brown trout.
Proceeds from this year's event will be donated towards various charities including
the Fishing For Kids Foundation and local sport fishing enhancement programs.
