Mr. David Oakes,
Clerk,
Town of Newcastle,

Dear Mr. Oakes:
A meeting of the Clarke Pioneer Cemetery Board was
held last evening at which time the misnaming of three
cemeteries was brought up, by the secretary. On a motion
by John Stone, seconded by Helen Schmid, and carried, :.
authori ty was given the secretary;,t"J) send a report to the
Town of Newcastle recommending that an amending by-law be
passed correcting these errors.

1. Reasons for the changes: In twenty years of research there
had never been any indication that the old Orono. cemetery
had any connection to the Christian Church.
2. The Neely name was the second name of a person on a tombstone
and therefore incorrect. The three names McNeile, Elliott, and
Ede represent the few persons buried in this small cemetery.
No one by the name of McNeil lives on this property at the
present time. Early records indicate that lot 15, con 3 was
owned by Callahan Lent. To further substantiate the Lent
claim refer tothe following: In the book by Nelson B. Lent
published in 1902 entitled, History of the Lent Family, there
is a reference on page 118 to the effect that Mrs. Lent "died
in 1855 and was buried at the old homestead in the Township
of Clarke, Ontario."
y~urs very truly,
