THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF NEWCASTLE
BY-LAW 88-171
being a by-law to designate the property
municipally known as liThe Richard South House"
located in Part of Lot 3, Concession 2, former
Township of Darlington, now in the Town of
Newcastle, Regional Municipality of Durham, as
a property of architectural and historical
value and interest which property is more particularly
described in schedule attached.
WHEREAS the Ontario Heritage Act, 1974 authorizes the Council of a municipality
to enact by-laws to designate real property including all the bUildings and
structures thereon to be of architectural and historical interest; and
WHEREAS the Council of the Corporation of the Town of Newcastle has caused
to be served upon the owner of the lands and premises known as liThe Richard
Souch House", located in Part of Lot 3, Concession 2, former Township of
Darlington, now in the Town of Newcastle and upon the Ontario Heritage
Foundation, Notice of Intention to Designate the aforesaid real property
and has caused such notice of intention to be published in the Canadian
Statesman, a newspaper having a general circulation in the area of the
designation, once each week for three consecutive weeks, namely September 28,
October 5 and October 12, 1988; and
WHEREAS liThe Richard Souch Housell in Part of Lot 3, Concession 2, former
Township of Darlington has a very significant architectural value of interest
to the Town of Newcastle and its people in that the brick home dates from
1850 and is representative of the 1-1/2 storey br~ck houses which were built
in this area in the middle of the 19th century. In particular, the three
bay wide facade and the front door, surrounded by transom and sidelights
which originally would have been glazed in a simple rectangular pattern,
the original 6 over 6 windows on the first floor, the returned eaves, and
the original basement windows whose lintels have been executed in the same
fashion as those on the first floor, are being specifically designated as
being of architecturallvalue; and
WHEREAS the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee of the Town
of Newcastle has recommended that the property liThe Richard Souch Housell, Part
of Lot 3, Concession 2, former Township of Darlington, now in the Town of
Newcastle, Regional Municipality of Durham, be designated under the terms
of the Ontario Heritage Act; and
WHEREAS no notice of objection to the proposed designation has been served
upon the Clerk of the Municipality;
NOW THEREFORE THE COUNCIL OF THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF NEWCASTLE HEREBY
ENACTS AS FOLLOWS:
1. There is designated as being of Architectural_and Historical value of
interest, the real property known municipally as liThe Richard Souch
,House", Part of Lot 3, Concession 2, former Township of Darlington,
Regional Municipality of Durham.
2. The Municipal Solicitor is hereby authorized to cause a copy of this
by-law to be registered against the property described in the
preceeding paragraph.

3. The Town Clerk is hereby authorized to cause a copy of this by-law to
be served upon the owners of the aforesaid property and on the Ontario
Heritage Foundation, and to cause notice of the passing of this by-law
to be published in the Canadian Statesman, a newspaper having general
circulation in the area of the designation, once each week for three
consecutive weeks.

premises si tuate lying and. being in , the Town of Newcastle
(formerly Township of Darlington) Regional Municipality of
Durham and being composed of:
FIRSTLY the north one hundred and twenty acres of Lot 2 and
SECONDLY the north ten acres of the south-east quarter of Lot
3,
both in the Second concession of the said Town of Newcastle
containing by admeasurement together one hundred and thirty
acres of land be the same more or less.
